Snow back in Barga

In 2007 the spring had already started to make inroads into the cold winter months as early as the first week in February. The Mimosa*, the flower symbolic of International Womans Day held each year on the 8th March was already in flower the month before as this article showed. This year it was a very different story with the cold weather destroying all the wild mimosa in the area. There were some sprigs of the yellow flower in evidence yesterday but they were brought in from warmer climes and then what happened towards the end of the day ? Flurries of snow coming in off the mountains.

Today those flurries became more insistent and by the afternoon it was snowing again in Barga.

The spring has fled and winter is with us once more.

Have a look at the video recorded this afternoon just as the sun was going down up at the Duomo in Barga Vecchia.

You’d better watch out
you’d better beware
‘cos Minimalist Santa’s coming to town

There are now 8 Minimalist Santa videos on the net … they can be all seen here

*Incidentally, we are actually wrong to call it Mimosa as it is not a true Mimosa at all but in fact is from the Acacia dealbata (Silver Wattle) – source

The genus Mimosa has had a tortuous history, having gone through periods of splitting and lumping, ultimately accumulating over 3,000 names, many of which have either been synonymized under other species or transferred to other genera. In part due to these changing circumscriptions, the name “Mimosa” has also been applied to several other related species with similar pinnate or bipinnate leaves but now classified in other genera, most commonly to Albizia julibrissin (Silk Tree) and Acacia dealbata (Silver Wattle)

    • Still. Applies. through April, into May, AND we have seen fresh snow on Mt's Giovo and Rondinaio from way out here, even in June.

P.S. Re: Daily Image : Whatever the origin of the Medici family emblem, it is interesting the note that the number of palle depicted in it varied. Originally there were 12; in Cosimo dé Medici's time it was seven; the ceiling of San Lorenzo's Sagrestia Vecchi has eight; Cosimo I's tomb in the Cappelle Medicee has five; and Ferdinando I's coat of arms in the Forte di Belvedere, six.

  3. P.P.S: Ferdinand appointed Galileo to the professorship of mathematics at the university of Pisa in 1588, shortly after Barga's famous native son, Pietro Angeli (1512-1573), reportedly poet to the court of the Medici, and soldier, was professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Pisa.

    • Well, if we did, we'd probably be more discreet than to say anything about it.

P.S. Link's not working. Do I need to give YOU remedial computer lessons now?
