The Cave Canem exhibition, of which we have already published a couple of articles, is almost ready for the public and what a show they have ready for you. Seventy artists exhibiting their work simultaneously in  four separate galleries in Barga Vecchia. Paintings, photographs, etchings, prints, poetry, video, music  and drawings all with the central theme of dogs and the relationship we have with these animals.

The works will be shown in the two Museum of Memory galleries, the Galleria Comunale and the Gallery Marzocco in Piazza Angelio. The opening for the exhibitions is set for 3.30 pm on Monday 1st November and the exhibitions will all be open daily until Sunday 7th November.

During the opening there will also be a presentation of the new book of dog photographs recently published by Marc Lemar.

Outside in Piazza Angelio something else for dog lovers has been organised, this time by the the animal rights Association “L’ Arca della Valle”. In april of this year (article here) they organised the first-ever dog show in Barga.

This time they have got something very different to show the public  – three living dog paintings …. no more information is available at the moment about just what that phrase “living dog paintings” might entail but word in the piazza is that it will involve Karin Schirmer and some of her dogs from the Intissar’s kennels so we can probably expect to see some of her stunning award winning breeds like the Sloughi and Chinese Crested.

The Association “L’ Arca della Valle have also something for all the dog lovers in Barga – bring your dog along to Piazza Angelio at 3 pm on Monday 1st November and have him or her photographed by a professional photographer.

Il cane

Noi mentre il mondo va per la sua strada,
noi ci rodiamo, e in cuor doppio è l’affanno,
e perché vada, e perché lento vada.
Tal, quando passa il grave carro avanti
del casolare, che il rozzon normanno
stampa il suolo con zoccoli sonanti,
sbuca il can dalla fratta, come il vento;
lo precorre, rincorre; uggiola, abbaia.
Il carro è dilungato lento lento.
Il cane torna sternutando all’aia.

(Myricae, XIII) – Giovanni Pascoli

Included in the exhibition are two photographs of Giovanni Pascoli with his dog and a small drawing – a self portrait of Pascoli with his beloved dog Guli
