The Presepe Vivente is one of those traditional events which happen in Barga once a year where it would seem that the whole city is taking part, either as a participant or just a viewer. In fact the Presepe Vivente has been sorely missed as inclement weather meant that the high spot of the Christmas calendar has been cancelled for the last two years and so this evening’s event was somewhat special. Finally all the work and preparation that goes into putting on an event of this size and complexity came to a triumphant conclusion with more than 200 people – “figuranti” taking part and many hundreds more enjoying the event to the full.
So, what actually is the Prespe Vivente ? a simple question but quite a complex answer is needed to get anywhere near to explaining as quite often with traditional events some of the original reasons and methods behind why an event is made or performed in that particular form are not clear. The gradually evolving form of the event goes under the blanket description of “tradition” and is therefore a difficult animal to pin down.
Just by looking at the images in this article, it is possible to see that it is a historical event with Mary and Joseph as central figures moving through a mediaeval town but what is not clear is at what precise date in history the couple are appearing.
Looking at them the date should be somewhere around zero. The Roman centurions and census takers (speaking in Latin) would seem to confirm that date but just before Mary and Joseph and their donkey arrived in the census room, their first port of call was to a schoolroom with desks and chairs, pupils and a teacher all meticulously wearing clothes dating from probably the 1930’s. Outside of the school two guards stand both dressed as soldiers from the 16th century.
As they then make their way through Barga Vecchia, they stop and rest outside the cellars and cantinas of millers, stonemasons, people making sausages, carpenters, charcoal makers and cobblers all dressed in clothes from the turn of the 1900’s.
Strangely enough it is quite believable, there she is, Mary with her husband Joseph standing patiently at her side as they stop for a few minutes in an authentic looking cantina with women sewing sheets in the dim light behind them. Even the passing of two men in full Centurion costume somehow or other does not shake or disturb the scene.
Eventually they make their way up to the Duomo where in a stable, miracle of miracles, a live baby appears in the arms of Mary followed moments later by the arrival of three Kings arriving bearing gifts just as a rocket is fired up into the night sky. Is it a star or a comet ? What ever it is, it means that the Presepe Vivente are once more finished for the year and hopefully next year, weather permitting, will be back even more baffling, beguiling, exciting, and above all – moving.

Il Presepe Vivente è uno di quegli eventi tradizionali che si verificano a Barga una volta l’anno in cui sembra che l’intera città partecipi, o come protagonista o come semplice spettatore. Il tempo inclemente ha fatto sì che questo immancabile appuntamento del Natale barghigiano sia mancato negli ultimi due anni e così l’evento di questa sera racchiudeva in se un’attesa speciale.
Alla fine grande lavoro di preparazione e di organizzazione per un evento di grandi dimensioni e di notevole complessità organizzativa che ha fatto scaturire il positivo risultato di 200 figuranti a realizzare la rappresentazione e di molte centinaia di persone a godersi lo spettacolo.
Fini qui la traduzione più o meno letterale (il mio inglese non è assolutamente all’altezza) di quello che ha scritto Keane. Il discorso che affronta dopo è troppo complesso per le mie capacità di traduttore da due soldi e quindi proverò a spiegare quel concetto con le mie parole e soprattutto con il mio punto di vista.
Vi dico subito che quello che dirò non mi porterà molta popolarità, ma arrivati a questo punto credo che le mie parole possano comunque servire ad interrogarsi sul futuro e sul significato del presepe vivente.
Partiamo dalle note positive: l’impegno di chi ha organizzato questa manifestazione, Enrico Cosimini, Mauro Moscardini, tanti, tanti volontari, il consigliere comunale Stefano Santi… Hanno dedicato settimane e settimane a mettere insieme tutti i pezzi. E tanta gente si è prestata con loro a realizzare i vari angoli che hanno formato il puzzle del presepe vivente di Barga.
A loro non può che andare il mio bravi ed il mio sincero apprezzamento per l’impegno che volontariamente hanno messo nel proseguire una bella tradizione natalizia barghigiana.
E’ invece proprio il concetto del puzzle che è stato messo insieme che non torna e che non è mai tornato in questi anni e forse da sempre in questi ultimi venti anni, ma che ieri sera mi è apparso ancora più confuso.
Stoi parlando dei tanti anacronismi che si ritrovano nella manifestazione barghigiana e forse in tutti i presepi viventi della zona che, scimmiottando l’evento di Barga, il primo che fu realizzato nella nostra vallata, hanno alla base lo stesso errore di fondo.
Entro nel percorso del presepe sotto lo sguardo vigile di alabardieri del ‘500; poi mi ritrovo ad osservare una ben ricostruita aula di scuola dei primi del ‘900 e poco dopo mi appare una davvero convincente scena del censimento di Betlemme, ai tempi della nascita di Gesù, per poi essere accolto da un bivacco contadino del secolo scorso ed essere infine indirizzato lungo il percorso del presepe da alcuni centurioni romani.
Ispirate agli anni della nascita di Gesù anche i costumi della Madonna e di Giuseppe e così pure quelli dei Re Magi.
Il tutto in un’atmosfera medievale naturale regalata dalle architetture dell’antico castello di Barga.
Ogni scena, ogni rappresentazione, ripresa a se stante, era perfetta e convincente, suggestiva al punto giusto. Ma è quando si mettono insieme i pezzi di questo puzzle che qualcosa non torna. Gli incastri non sono quelli giusti e nemmeno i colori…
Bisognerebbe uniformare il tutto a mio umile giudizio. Forse sbaglierò, forse è il solo messaggio del Presepe quello che conta nella rappresentazione, ma non sarebbe meglio se i prossimi anni si cercasse anche di uniformare i tempi ed i secoli raccontati?
Non sarebbe bello un presepe vivente interamente ambientato nei primi anni del secolo scorso? Quello che forse ci riesce anche scenograficamente ed organizzativamente meglio raccontare? Non sarebbe bello che il censimento di Betlemme fosse impersonato da scrivani del regno d’Italia ed ai centurioni si sostituissero le guardie sabaude?
E che anche la Sacra famiglia vestisse i panni ugualmente umili dei contadini del secolo scorso in cerca di fortuna nel loro viaggio da emigranti nel mondo? E che alla fine quel presepe che viene raccontato rappresenta in tutto e per tutto una Barga a noi vicina eppure già tanto lontana?
Tutto può tranquillamente rimanere come è adesso. Il Presepe, nonostante negli anni il suo lustro e la sua imponenza siano andati lentamente calando, rappresenta comunque un evento simbolo per i barghigiani e per tanta gente che vi accorre ed anche io tornerò volentieri, come sempre a vederlo. Ma mi piacerebbe ugualmente che questa mio visione fosse tenuta in considerazione e nei prossimi anni assistere ad un cambiamento che a mio avviso renderebbe unico davvero il Presepe Vivente di Barga.

Caro Direttore, mi trovi esattamente concorde . Al di là del forte impegno personale dei figuranti e della organizzazione , apprezzabile, sincero e generoso, forse fare un punto di situazione, ripensare onestamente e concretamente ad una strategia migliore, ricercare quel tessuto connettivo di cui parli, potrebbe portare ad un risultato sicuramente più apprezzato. Speriamo che la critica, onesta sincera e mai dispregiativa, ma costruttiva, porti a qualcosa.
Many thanks to all those who organised the Presepe and took part to make it such a special event. It must have involved a lot of work all round. We enjoyed it a lot, and felt that there was not just local colour and charm. but also a real feeling of community, much to be treasured these days. And weren’t we all fortunate with the weather!
