In our fourth Conversation with the Artist – a project aimed at talking with and compiling a comprehensive list of the working artists in this area, we actually break one of the founding rules of the whole project – that of sitting face-to-face with the artist and instead our conversation this time takes place across the Internet using the medium that is available to find out a little bit more about the artist Luca Orlandi.
Luca Orlandi, born in 1956 in Seravezza.
Attended the art school at Massa-Carrara, then at 20 years old left the area and moved to London to learn English working in many of the Italian restaurants that can be found in London before moving on to Amsterdam where he remained for the next 12 years.
He exhibited in various galleries including the De Vrijplatts with artists such as Hans Booy, Tijo Walstra, Alex 2000 and Julio Yecerra.
He became interested in Buddhism and because of his paintings started to move towards Tanka paintings – usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala of some sort.(see gallery below)
On the death of his father in 2007 he returned to Garfagnana and now lives and paints in Brucciano, Molazzana.
He is at this moment preparing a series of paintings for the exhibition in the near future.

November 1st, 2003, Gallery-OpenStudio “De Vrijplaats” started its activities. “De Vrijplaats” is a transparent space: 100 square meters behind a large glass of 8 by 4 meters. It’s located in a busy street, in the east-centre of Amsterdam and close to the University of Amsterdam in the Roetersstraat. Next to the Albert Heijn supermarket. The space is suited for co-operation among artists, their public and the wider environment. Now the emphasis is on the exhibition of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and installations. Other art events, such as readings, workshops, music-sessions, performances, video, fashion, architecture and literature are very welcomed. – Gallery-OpenStudio “De Vrijplaats”, Sarphatistraat 143, 1018 GD Amsterdam The Netherlands.tel. +3120-3200463/6273093 KvK nr. 34194627 www.devrijplaats.nl
Conversations with Artists
Conversations with Artists – Back in the early 80s there was a project over the whole of this area known as Project Echo which was aimed at providing links between the educational system, the home environment and culture in general.
In those years the guiding hand behind this project was the teacher Duse Lemmeti (now retired) and the then assesore of cultura for Castelnuovo, dott. Carlo Popiaz (now the principal of the IPSIA school in Castelnuovo – interview with dott. Popaiz can be heard here)
Unfortunately that project is long gone but one vital part which was first announced all those years ago at the age of new technology taken on a new life. The idea then was to build a “cultural map” of the area with a census of the artists working within the territory.
Long before the age of Internet this meant a good deal of letter writing, faxing and telephoning to build up a comprehensive list of working artists in this area.
All that has now changed as we move into the era of daily and constant contact.
Barga is known as art city not just historically but also because of the many exhibitions by contemporary artists during the year.
Over the next few months we will be talking with and compiling a comprehensive list of the working artists in this area. – article here
