The storm during which over 300 mm of rain fell in just a few hours hit this area three nights ago and has left considerable damage in the Serchio Valley.
The already soaked ground could no longer cope with that amount of rain and landslides have been happening right through the valley.
The full extent of the damage is gradually becoming clearer with 60 people being evacuated from their houses in the Comune of Barga, water still undrinkable, schools in the area being shut for the last three days and still many roads blocked or partially blocked by landslides.
At one point during the storm every single road to Barga was blocked by landslides. Some have since been cleared but still the main road from Barga down to Loppia and Mologno are blocked by the landslides and transport is difficult to many of the outlying small villages in the mountainside around Barga.
Agriculture has also been hit with many people reporting losses of vines from vineyards and even olive trees slipping down the mountainside.
All eyes are now on the weather forecast as another storm is expected this afternoon or this evening.
