Demolition starts outside the Teatro
Work started this week on the long awaited demolition of the columns that have stood in the piazza outside the Teatro dei Differenti and have been the centre of fierce polemic over the years as to their use and esthetic value. Funding has finally been found with help from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca to clear the piazza and start again. More images here

This is outrageous. Even if they were a mistake I think they added a unique quality and curiosity. The trouble with modern society is that every square inch has to be something "useful". This is Definitely the "C" way of doing things; if it doesn't fit obliterate it. What would life be without diversity and the absence of curiosity? Try telling a stranger where the theatre is, now. "Oh, remember where those odd looking, out-of-place arches were?"

What rubbish! They were hideous compared to the other structures in the little piazza. Yes they gave you something to lean against when you were recovering from the heat of the opera. Yes they provided some kind of eye-leading composition. So? I'm sure Barghigiani can put something nicer there instead that's equally useless. It's not like that's an unknown thing to do...
