Osteria Angelio closes

One of the cultural centers of Barga Vecchia shut its doors this weekend. The Osteria Angelio in Piazza Angelio is no more. It has ceased to be - its expired and gone to meet its maker. Its a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. Its metabolic processes are now 'istory. Its off the twig. Its kicked the bucket, its shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible!! IT IS AN EX- OSTERIA

John Moscardini and Gianmarco Marseglia started the Osteria when Barga Vecchia was still in its dormant stage. Most of the inhabitants had either left or were sleeping. Some observers gave only 6 months of life to their project but in fact they went on for over 6 years blazing the trail for others to follow.

A bottle of wine from the fine wine collection, nurtured and fussed over by John would be perfect company for the simple but tasty meals that he brought out daily from the kitchens. Add to this the sharp and dry humour of Gianmarco, the Jazz music playing in the background and it all added up to making eating in the Osteria an experience to be remembered.

Many of the best jazz musicians in the area passed through their doors for the Osteria Jazz Evenings plus many, many artists and photographers made full use of the free exhibition space. Have a wander though the Osteria site and see just how many there were

Very sad indeed. I had some good food, some good wine and some good service in that gaff. I even smahsed the place up and splashed claret around on my first ever visit! RAW

What sad news. John made the best panna cotta I'd ever tasted. Great food, great wine, great friendly atmosphere. What will Gianmarco and John do now? Will the building house another venture?

I always associate the Osteria with Rino (Jack) Nanini as we often saw him there for his regular evening meal.
These two greats will be sadly missed..
In shock ....

What sad news for us too. The Osteria was always one of our guests' favourite spots for great food and wine and for soaking up the atmosphere in the Piazza. It is also somewhere we associated with Jack, who would often be sitting there or leaning against the decking having a wee rest.

So sad to hear this news.It was the hub of Barga. What has happened to GianMarco and John? Would be good to have a feature on them.

We are so sad to hear that our favorite watering hole has closed their doors... where will John find his sausage and beans now? Gianmarco, maybe you will have more time to travel, and possibly come to Colorado for a visit? Osteria Anglio will be sorely missed! -- Denise & John Bertagni

Oh my God , I can't believe it!!! I knew Giamma left (I'm friends with his wife) but I had no idea it was going to close . I'm coming back to Barga this year for the first time in 3 years with my husband who has never been , I've been going on about the Osteria to him ever since we met , he'll be gutted.
Any chance of re-opening for the summer ?

Pizza? Did the Osteria serve pizza? It wasn't on the menu when we started going there.
The osteria will actually be reopening on April 10th under new management. Will it keep its old name I wonder. Hope so...
