Artist of the month - Richard Clare
Artist of the Month for April is Richard Clare.
In 2002 English landscape artist Richard Clare and his family came to Barga just for a holiday, but the magical beauty of Barga seduced them into buying a property there!
Richard and his family now try to get over from wet and cold Saddleworth in Northern England as often as possible (at least a month in the summer to guarantee them some sunshine). With his box of paints, Richard can often be seen wandering around Barga’s alleyways sketching and painting plein-air. He is currently working on several large canvasses for an exhibition with two other English artists and three Italian artists as a cultural art exchange with Liguria and North Yorkshire. The touring exhibition will be shown in July, August and September this year in La Spezia, Sestri Levante and Carro. Full article and more images can be found here

What's wrong with Saddleworth? It's part of the beautiful Yorkshire moors and a British national park. It has a folk festival and a long history. It's people also are a lot friendlier than the people from Barga who spend all their time hating each other (see their long unhappy faces in the streets of Barga) and thinking of ways to cheat each other. By the way they are also likely to sell you a useless property half-way up a mountain at 3 times the local going rate, without any of the required permission and a promise that you can make money out of renting it out to tourists in the summer (which of course you can't). As for the weather half the mountain is liable to fall on your head or block your access road in spring or autumn in a mud-slide when the rains come, and it always goes down to freezing sub-zero temperatures in winter. And I haven't even mentioned the earthquakes or forest fires. There's also work in Saddleworth. Better stay in Yorkshire!
Can it be true. I've been on holiday in Barga and have loved it. But strange things do happen and I don't speak the language. There are a lot of programs on TV with stories about people for who it goes horribly wrong in Italy.
I also love the UK but feel I must stick up for the folk of Barga. Never have we felt ripped off by anyone there, least of all by any of the people involved in the purchase and doing up of our property there. As for long faces......you just need to say Caio to anyone in the street and you'll get a smiling response. The shopkeepers are friendly and interested in knowing about you and as for the weather....we're a bit smug to realise, after enjoying great skiing only an hour's drive away, that we have a great winter place as well as a great summer one. Don't forget almost everyone in Barga has family in the UK and there's a strong sense of connection.
