Barga, May 1989. During a pastoral visit by Monsignor Alessandro Plotti, Archbishop of Pisa, an incident occurred that would leave a lasting mark on the memory of the city.
As part of his visit, the Archbishop was being guided through the churches of the parish by Monsignor Piero Giannini, Provost of Barga. Walking down from the Canonica in Piazza Beato Michele along Via della Speranza, the two made their way towards the Church of San Felice, home to the ancient Arciconfraternita della Misericordia.
With quiet pride, Monsignor Giannini prepared the Archbishop for what he was about to see:
“Come, Your Excellency, in this small and ancient church I will show you a beautiful painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The artist is unknown, but it is believed to date from the 17th century. The hand that painted it was certainly a very capable one, as you will see.”
But what awaited them inside was not admiration, but shock.
When the door was opened, the wall where the painting had long hung stood empty. The Saint Sebastian had vanished. It had been stolen.
The theft was immediately reported to the local Carabinieri, who passed the case on to the judicial authorities. Despite investigations and searches, no trace of the painting was ever found.
And yet there remains a measure of hope. Over the years, many works of art stolen from churches have been recovered thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Carabinieri’s specialised art protection unit, which continues its work—including, still, the search for the missing Saint Sebastian of San Felice.
It is this hope that prompts the publication of the photograph reproduced here, drawn from the rich archive of Angelo Pellegrini, who has documented Barga and its artistic heritage over many years.
His photograph was also used to paint a copy of the missing painting by Federico Baldassini which now hangs in the church in the same position on the wall where the origianal was taken from.

Barga, maggio 1989. Durante una visita pastorale di Monsignor Alessandro Plotti, Arcivescovo di Pisa, si verificò un episodio destinato a lasciare un segno duraturo nella memoria della città.
Nel corso delle visite alle chiese della parrocchia, l’Arcivescovo era accompagnato da Monsignor Piero Giannini, Proposto di Barga. Scendendo dalla Canonica di Piazza Beato Michele lungo via della Speranza, i due si dirigevano verso la chiesa di San Felice, sede della storica Arciconfraternita della Misericordia.
Con un tono di composta fierezza, Monsignor Giannini anticipava ciò che l’Arcivescovo stava per ammirare:
«Venga, Eccellenza, in questa piccola e antica chiesa Le mostrerò un bellissimo dipinto raffigurante il martirio di San Sebastiano. L’autore è sconosciuto, ma si ritiene risalga al XVII secolo. La mano che lo ha eseguito era certamente molto capace, come potrà vedere.»
Ma ciò che li attendeva all’interno non fu l’ammirazione, bensì lo sgomento.
Aperta la porta, la parete sulla quale il dipinto era da sempre collocato apparve vuota. Il San Sebastiano era scomparso. Era stato rubato.
Il furto venne immediatamente denunciato ai Carabinieri, che trasmisero la notizia all’autorità giudiziaria. Nonostante le indagini e le ricerche, dell’opera non fu mai trovata traccia.
Eppure una speranza rimane. Nel corso degli anni, numerose opere d’arte trafugate dalle chiese sono state recuperate grazie al lavoro della sezione specializzata dell’Arma dei Carabinieri per la tutela del patrimonio artistico, che continua ad occuparsi anche della ricerca del San Sebastiano scomparso da San Felice.
È proprio questa speranza che ha spinto alla pubblicazione della fotografia qui riprodotta, tratta dal ricco archivio di Angelo Pellegrini, che nel corso degli anni ha documentato Barga e il suo patrimonio artistico.
La sua fotografia è stata inoltre utilizzata per realizzare una copia del dipinto scomparso, eseguita da Federico Baldassini, che oggi è esposta nella chiesa, nella stessa posizione sulla parete da cui fu sottratto l’originale.
