Work on the renovations to the church at San Pietro in Campo just outside Barga has taken a new direction with the discovery of a large fresco probably dating from the 1800’s on the wall behind the alter which had been hidden by a layer of paint since the late 60’s – early 70’s.
Work started on the church back in June 2004. By September of that year the roof was completely removed and a new one constructed during the winter of 2005. Since then work has been going on inside the church with a new underfloor heating system laid under the floor tiles. A new lighting system has also been installed and work has started on the decorations inside the building by the Ditta Giacchini Giuseppe. It was during this work that part of the hidden fresco was discovered and which has now been gradually brought back to the light of day by a team of restorers led by Lorenzo Lanciani.
The architect in charge of the work, Massimiliano Lanciani assured us this morning that all would be ready for the official opening of the finished church on September 12th. The site for San Pietro in Campo is here
