Many of you have already noticed that barganews has been a little quiet all this week. Added to which putting the word “barga” into the world’s favourite search engine, Google – still brings up barganews as the first entry out of nearly threequarters of a million but instead of linking directly to the site there is a very ominous line, which reads ” this site may harm your computer” and the link takes you to a page informing you about the possible presence of malicious software on barganews. So what is going on?
The answer lies once more with some hackers who have penetrated the security on the barganews servers. No there are no malicious software being downloaded to your computer when you browse barganews but yes, they have managed to inject a small line of code, which opens up a pop-up window, which if clicked tries to spam the viewer with unwanted websites.
This is a known exploit of the software that is running on the servers producing barganews and upgrading to the latest version has removed this problem. Now it’s just a question of a cleanup. Easier said than done, as barganews is not just one site, but a portal for 30 sites all intertwined and updated on a daily basis. Each of these sites now has to have a thorough checking of all the code, changes made where necessary, and the whole “backend” updated with the latest secure software. This is taking far longer than anticipated so please be patient. We will be back up and running again normally in a day or so.
If you happen to notice parts of the site that are no longer working as they should please call in on the forum and let the administrators know.
I notice that the webcams can no longer be accessed from the home page. Is this a feature of the problems you are currently having or have they been removed?
