The torrential rain over the past few days in this area has left its mark on some house in Barga Vecchia – a “high tide mark” on the walls left by the receding flood water that had silently infiltrated during the night.
A blockage in a section of the centuries old drainage system under the stone roads in Vic. del Comune left three houses with their ground floor flooded as rainwater came up through the floors and walls.
The most badly affected was the home of the Adami family who had their living room flooded for the second time this year.
A cantina and tool store of their neighbours was also flooded as was the nearby studio of the painter Keane.
Some older paintings and works on paper were damaged by the water but luckily most of his latest work – the series “the Nuns of Barga” (article here) were hanging on the walls and well above the creeping water.
Emergency work by workers for the comune using bags of quick setting cement solved some of the problems but obviously a more long term approach will be needed to solve what could be a more serious problem with the drainage system in Barga Vecchia.
Sympathies to those affected. I suppose it’s too much to hope that the rain swept the phone box away…
