Just one look at the front page of barganews is enough to show quite graphically just how much Barga is immersed in jazz this week but one story that almost got lost in all of the excitement of the Barga Jazz Festival really does deserve its own article. On the evening of the 22nd whilst the Rossano Emili Ensemble were entertaining the crowds in Piazza Angelio there was another spectacle taking place behind and above them. From the Piazza all that could be seen was the occasional flash of light in the sky but for many people in the valley they were treated to an electrical storm the likes of which many people have never seen before and all the more intriguing and unusual as it was as if the sound had been turned off. Huge flashes of lightning crisscrossing the sky with seemingly no breaks in between each jagged fork of lightning… in other words a more or less constant lightning show but with no accompanying thunder. It was completely silent. This was because it was not taking place in the mountains above Barga but in the mountains further north in Emilia-Romagna.
Huge electric storm overhead

The jazz crows may not have noticed. But our state-of-the-art infrastructure certainly did. At the first bolt, my ADSL connection went into hiding.
