Just over five years ago the face of Italy was changed for ever. From midnight on the 10th January 2005, smoking was banned from all bars and restaurants in Italy. From that day onwards all smokers has to go into a closed room set aside just for smokers if there is one provided or smoke outside…. or, shock, horror, probe – give up (article from 2005 here)
Some bars in Barga in 2005 had already been no smoking places for a number of years, such as Aristo’s in Barga Vecchia, so his clientele had already a couple of seasons to get used to the idea of standing outside in the piazza to smoke.
Compulsory wearing of seatbelts in cars was made law years ago but a quick check on passing cars in Barga will show that this law has still not been taken on board 100%. The use of cell phones whist driving is still widespread, but the wearing of helmets on motorbikes does seem to been universally accepted as a good thing.
We said in that article in 2005 – “If the smokers can give up smoking with their glass of wine, beer and coffee then anything could happen …… maybe even many of the determined and independent Barghigiani women who are still defying most of the trends in Europe and wearing their real furs in winter might too will crumble under the pressure being exerted on them from outside and leave their furs at home ?”
Five years has passed…. the furs are still in evidence and there seems to to be a creeping re-emergence of smoking in public places once again.
The following letter arrived in the barganews office this morning complaining about smokers once again lighting up inside one of the restaurants in Barga (at the end of their working day) showing that even after all these years, feeling can still run high between the non smoker and the smoker, especially when phrases such as “rights” and “education” are used.
On a more lighter note … how about “the penny finally drops from 2008” or Adventures of a Non-Smoking Smoker from Deety, which can be seen here
Caro/a anonimo/a,
I can only add my opinions as a non-smoker but also as one of those 'gestori'.
Having worked in bars and restaurants in Canada when smoking was not prohibited, I can recall many nights coming home from closing up very late and trying to wash the smoke out of my hair, and waking up the next morning with my eyes nearly swollen shut from the smoke. The winter time was the worst, when we were unable to open the doors and windows to let the smoke out and the fresh air in. What a relief when the legislation was enacted to prohibit smoking!
There was a time when you could smoke in hospitals as well!
Pienamente d'accordo.
Anonimo, ripassa un po' la grammatica, però
