L'orto – and the grass just keeps on growing

lorto-barganews-barga-001A surprise this week down on the l’orto . The ground was covering in white and from a distance it looked like it had snowed during the night. Although it has snowed in the past in late April it is not what could be termed an “normal” occurrence. Upon closer inspection though it was something much more mundane – it was the white flowers of the pioppo – aspen or poplar trees that border the two fields. An incredible amount of abundant white fluffy stuff covering a large area. When nature wants to do things in abundance it really knows how to overdo it. I presume that they are flowers and not seeds as the idea that all those seeds are now sitting in the ground waiting to germinate is not something to smile about.

lorto-vegetable-garden-barga-002As we said in the last article … the damp weather has meant that the grass in the bottom field appeared to be visibly growing at an almost cartoon like rate. This field has to be ready to be plowed tomorrow morning at the latest so first it will have to have the grass cut. This morning the grass was almost at waist height and showing no signs of slowing down its incredible growth rate.  So, send in the strimmers and then it is time to rake and collect and start the compost heap. The bottom field is now ready for the plough.

  1. Can’t believe how green it is down there! The old timers here in Maine call Poplar trees Popple. They do not shed quite like what you had there… but they certainly do!

Looking good old man farmer, looking good!
