A sweet piece of theatre, almost at the end of the season at the Teatro dei Differenti this evening as the two comics Leonardo Capuano and Roberto Abbiati brought their creation “Pasticceri – io e mio fratello Roberto” and placed it in front of the Barga audience. There was some hesitation amongst the seated crowd as Capuano and Abbiati hopped in and then out of character right through the show reminding people that this was real theatre and we were not all present in a working Pasticceria but, and here comes the crunch … they were not just playing with props – these were real cakes being prepared and decorated with a considerable skill from the two on stage.
The smells that were gradually filling the theatre were real smells of delicious cakes. This disjointed reality break was kept up and manipulated as the show went on with the two calling for prompts for the wings after apparently losing their lines and kicking malfunctioning lights. All were prepared in advance and expertly timed to perfection to bring the audience onto their side and part of the spectacle.
The real cherry on the cake was as the audience left their seats at the end of the show and filed down stairs to leave the theatre they were presented with the cakes prepared during the show.
So was it theatre or a cake decoration demonstration?
Either way it was entertaining – even the photograph of Frank Zappa hanging on the wall behind the due fratelli pasticceri, seemed to be smiling.
PASTICCERI – io e mio fratello Roberto di Leonardo Capuano e Roberto Abbiati, regia di Leonardo Capuano e Roberto Abbiati
