International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
In Barga and elsewhere in this region it is generally celebrated by women going out for the evening together and leaving the men at home.
A quick tour of the restaurants in Barga this evening showed that the women only night has more or less declined as in most restaurants there were a mix of sexes and even small children eating out with their parents. All in all, a fairly sedate and peaceful affair
That is except in one eating place in Barga Giardino where the noise hits you as soon as you enter the doors and push past the curtain. Paolo Gas was at “full steam ahead mode” inside Pub46 with the place jumping with women only as they climbed onto the tables to dance to the beat.
A male stripper from centocelle Nightmare was for many of the guests the” cherry on the cake” for an extremely noisy and exhausting fun night out with the girls.
