Despite the occasional sprinkling of rain, large crowds were this afternoon in Filecchio for a sporting event with a difference. An event which does not appear on television, is hardly reported in newspapers and for many people has acquired the label”an urban myth” as they are unsure if it is a real event or not.
For those in the know, cheese rolling is not a mythical beast. It is not something that was done in the past and in modern Italy no longer exists but is instead a closely contested, dynamic sport with a guiding body laying down strict rules to the competitors.
It is not a sport for the weak of heart, poor spirit or weak constitution – and that goes not just for those taking part but also for the spectators lining the route.
As part of the final events for this years annual sagra della polenta e uccelli, now in its 44th year, the organisers set up the 2nd Filecchio Cheese Rolling competition – Tiro della Forma
Three teams comprising of three athletes, competing against each other in the narrow streets of Filecchio to see which team can move a cheese from one end of the village to the other in the least possible throws.
As you can plainly see in the large gallery of images and video at the end of this article, it was a fiercely fought out event right up until the final throw from the winning green team.

To imagine this just think of a game of golf but instead of a tiny white ball being the centre of attention, you have to enlarge your idea and instead replace that tiny object with a huge Parmesan cheese weighing 25 kilos and it not being struck with sticks but is instead thrown and rolled along the ground.
Cheese throwers wrap a long strap around the cheese and attach the free end of the strap to their wrist. There’s a run-up and a jump, launching the cheese and using the leather strap as it unwinds to ‘whip’ it and give it maximum momentum.
The men are not small men – you need a certain physique to be able to throw and control 25 kg of cheese moving at high speed over an uneven ground but as the contest continued through the afternoon it also became obvious that technique is of a vital importance – it is not just about brute force.
For the spectators the sport of Tiro della Forma is not without its dangers as a missed timed throw or a badly deflected fast moving cheese can cause quite severe injuries. Luckily in the narrow streets of Filecchio there were marshals not just guiding the competitors but also making sure that any spectators were out on the danger zone but still it paid to be alert this afternoon.

Parmigiano-Reggiano is a hard granular cheese, cooked but not pressed, named after the producing areas near Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, and Bologna (all in Emilia-Romagna), and Mantova (in Lombardia), Italy. Under Italian law only cheese produced in these provinces may be labelled “Parmigiano-Reggiano”, while European law classifies the name as a protected designation of origin. It is informally known as the “king of cheese.”

Nonostante qualche goccia di pioggia, oggi una grande folla ha raggiunto Filecchio per assistere ad un evento sportivo diverso dal solito.
Uno sport che non si vede in televisione o che si legge sui giornali, e che molte persone vivono come una leggenda urbana, incerti se credere o meno che esista.
Si tratta del tiro della forma, non un mito né una cosa antichissima, bensì uno sport seguito e praticato ancora oggi e inquadrato da precise regole.
Non è uno sport per i deboli di cuore, i poveri di spirito o per chi è gracile ed è un’attività entusiasmante non solo per chi è in gara ma anche per gli spettatori.
Questo pomeriggio il tiro della forma si è tenuto nell’ambito della 44° sagra della Polenta e uccelli, con tre squadre composte da tre atleti ciascuna che si sono sfidate tra le strette vie di Filecchio.
Scopo della competizione far attraversare il paese dalla forma di parmigiano avvalendosi del minor numero di tiri possibile, facendo rotolare ben 25 chili di parmigiano.
Un grande spettacolo di forza e abilità per questa seconda edizione del tiro alla forma versione Polenta e uccelli organizzata in collaborazione con l’ASD Gruppo Sportivo Lancio del formaggio Lucca – Garfagnana.

1. II gioco del lancio della forma di formaggio viene effettuato con forme di formaggio dello stesso peso e dimensioni (diametro e spessore) ed una cordella o fettuccia per effettuare il lancio;
2. Poiché le forme di formaggio (pecorino, asiago, parmigiano ecc.) sono create con i pesi e misure notevolmente diverse, le gare vengono suddivise per categorie (leggera fino a kg 1,500, media leggera fino a kg 3, media fino a kg 6,500, pesante fino a kg 16 e massima oltre kg 25) secondo il peso, nell’ambito di ciascuna categoria debbono essere scelte forme uguali che dopo ogni gioco vengono scambiate tra i contendenti:
per facilitare il lancio, il lanciatore avvolge intorno alla forma una fettuccia o cordella sia per facilitare la presa sia per imprimere una maggior forza rotativa;
3. II campo di gioco in genere è una strada campestre oppure delle piste in terra battuta;
4. Ogni gara consiste nel lanciare la forma il più lontano possibile con un numero prefissato di lanci;
5. Ogni partita o gara viene disputata in più giochi; por ogni. gioco vengono effettuati vari lanci a seguire, si aggiudica il gioco il lanciatore o la squadra che, dopo il numero di lanci prefissato ha percorso la maggior distanza;
6. Le origini di questo gioco, per le gare amatoriali non di campionato, impongono il rispetto delle regole tradizionali locali che diversificano nel numero di lanci e nel modo di percorrere la strada.
La regola comune per tutte le gare di lancio della forma di formaggio è quella che il vincitore riceve in premio la forma di formaggio giocata dall’avversario;
7. In caso di rottura della forma durante il gioco, la parte maggiore determina il segno per ripartire con il tiro successivo, mentre i rimanenti pezzi sono a disposizione degli spettatori che seguono la gara per essere subito mangiati.
Inoltre è tradizione che il vincitore, in segno di rispetto ed amicizia, al termine della gara oltre a stringere la mano al vinto offre a questo un bicchiere di vino.
