It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of cav Rando Bertoia, the last survivor of the Arandora Star tragedy.
Rando was 93 and died peacefully at home in Glasgow, Scotland.
His great serenity and courage inspired many.
He was a champion of reconciliation and peace and when pressed to allocate blame for the tragedy he would reply: ‘It was war. These things happen in war.’
Rando was guest of honour at the opening of the Italian Cloister Garden in Glasgow two years ago which contains the world’s biggest monument to the Arandora Star tragedy.
His name is carved into its plaque of benefactors.
His testimony and courage ensured the story of those who died will never be forgotten.
Rando’s funeral will be a small private event but it is hoped to have a public memorial service at a later date.
Details will be published here. Requiescat in pace. Rando – non ti scorderemo mai. – source –ItalianScotland
