The cube was first presented to the public in Barga four years ago in Piazza Angelio. Then it was a 3 m cube which filled a good part of the piazza and on which the two artists painting the cube have to work double-time to cover the large surface (article here)
This time, the cube2 was a slightly smaller version measuring just 2 metres but once again in the time allowed the artists working to cover the surface had little time to stand back and admire their work.
Why was time so important? – because just like the original cube there were musicians inside the cube playing their music with a strict time limit. They would play their music for only one hour, one minute and one second.
The cube2 was presented last night at the Barga Jazz Club Summer at Villa Libano to a large crowd assembled to watch the highly publicised event.
Andrea Guzzoletti, Simone Venturi and Giuseppe Jos Venturi were somehow crammed inside the cube with all their instruments playing a composition based around the work of Italy’s most famous naive painter, Antonio Ligabue.
On the outside Nazareno Giusti was drawing scenes from his latest graphic novel, based on the life and work of Antonio Ligabue.
Keane and Fabrizio Da Prato from the group Artists at Work are also in evidence keeping the audience entertained with some rapid brushstrokes filling in the gaps.
After the allotted time had expired, they used knives to slit the newly finished drawings to bring the musicians once more out into the light and to enjoy the warm applause from the audience.
The cube can be seen again in public later on this year at the Lucca Comics festival in Lucca and once again in Milan at the presentation of Nazareno Giusti’s graphic novel.
