The Fornacetta, just outside the main walls of Barga vecchia, is where you find the Church of Madonna Assunta (Our Lady of the Assumption), which is said to have been built on the ruins of a “hostel” where pilgrims had been given refuge as far back as the 13th Century.
Last night it was the backdrop for a concert in the church featuring the centuries old organ, parts of which, some experts say, date back to the early 1500’s.
A few years ago, the instrument was beautifully restored by Glauco Ghilardi from Lucca and it was restoration of another organ, which time in the Duomo of Barga, which was the centre of attention as the concert was organised by the “Amici dell’Organo del Duomo di Barga” – the friends of the Duomo di Barga organ.
The large pipes in the Duomo organ are succumbing to the effects of gravity and age and are starting to compress and if nothing is done shortly will no longer remain in tune or in the near future, remain upright.
