New CONAD supermarket opens in Barga

A ray of sunshine this morning in what is without a doubt, gloomy economic times as the tape was cut and speeches were made at the opening of the new CONAD supermarket in via Canipaia in Barga.

The supermarket is now in a much larger space with a staff of 15 people but actually not really a new supermarket as the CONAD has been in existence in Barga since the early 80s.

It has  moved its premises just 50 metres from Via Roma with its limited parking space and terrible loading and unloading problems to the nearby via Canipaia which is now gradually becoming a viable commercial centre with the Bar Nardini and Simonini Pharmacy.

We first published an article about the redevelopment of this area back in 2014 – (article here)

An area which once housed the historic Nardini Bus company before becoming the workshops, offices and parking spaces for the CLAP bus company has been shut for the last couple of years after the CLAP moved to a new centre further down in the valley.

There has been talk ever since of building a new commercial centre on that land.

It would appear that the whole area is being redeveloped into a new shopping and commercial centre and Barga Giardino as we know it will be drastically changed.

Little did we know that it would take the next six years for that to happen.

Better late than never.
