One of the changes in Barga Vecchia over the last few years has been the proliferation of tables and chairs in the piazza to seat the visitors to Barga as they relax in the piazza.
As sitting in the hot sun is not always the best situation when you want to eat a meal, most restaurants put out umbrellas to give some shade to their clients.

All well and good when the sun is shining but a sudden change of weather conditions can cause sudden upsets.
A brief storm which only lasted a few minutes which swept through the city this morning with high wind and torrential rain did precisely that.

– In Sorbano del Giudice (Lucca) a man died when he was hit by a tree.
– At the La Malfa Park in Carrara, another tree fell on a woman who died (the attempts to revive her by 118 personnel were useless).
– Four injured from falling trees at Camping Italia in Marina di Massa: three were taken in yellow code to the Apuane hospital; the Fire Brigade is still busy freeing a fourth person, a woman (red code) who was in a caravan.
– In the municipality of Barga a roof fell on a car, injuring four people: three in the green code and one in the red code, all taken to the San Luca hospital in Lucca.
– In addition to the injured mentioned above, seven yellow and two green codes have been taken from Carrara to the Apuane hospital so far.
– In Camaiore, via Italica, yellow code for another person overwhelmed by a tree and taken to the Versilia hospital.
