Today is the 20th February and it’s been an unseasonably warm and sunny day and just to add to the odd feeling that maybe just maybe the worst of the winter is behind us – this afternoon flying around the Duomo were two swallows or swifts
Normally they arrive in Barga much closer to Easter but this year they are very early.
The phrase here is “one swallow does not a spring make” and the weather forecast for the following week is not all that ” spring like” so maybe we should be a little bit more pessimistic.
The swallows in Barga are an annual feast visually and aurally with their coming heralding the arrival of spring and their leaving for the warmer climes of far away Africa, the rather dismal foretelling of the approaching winter.
There has been a particular group of swallows who nest each year under the Volta del Menchi below Palazzo Pancrazi in Barga Vecchia.
Their acrobatic flying through the open arches and walkways in the Volta has been one of the glorious sights of Barga in the summer.
Later on in the summer we get to see their young swooping noisily around the Volta del Menchi and then soon after, the bitter sweet melancholy bit where they will sit in line on some of the wires strung through Barga Vecchia and then one morning they will all just disappear again.
The cycle repeats itself each year and never fails to amaze.

Oggi è il 20 febbraio ed è stata una giornata insolitamente calda e soleggiata, e solo per aggiungere alla strana sensazione che forse il peggio dell’inverno è alle spalle – questo pomeriggio volavano attorno al Duomo due rondini o balestrucci.
Di solito arrivano a Barga molto più vicino a Pasqua, ma quest’anno sono molto precoci.
La frase qui è “una rondine non fa primavera” e le previsioni del tempo per la settimana seguente non sono molto “primaverili”, quindi forse dovremmo essere un po’ più pessimisti.
Le rondini a Barga sono una festa annuale visiva e sonora, con la loro venuta che annuncia l’arrivo della primavera e la loro partenza per i climi più caldi dell’Africa lontana, l’annuncio piuttosto triste dell’avvicinarsi dell’inverno.
C’è un gruppo particolare di rondini che nidificano ogni anno sotto la Volta del Menchi sotto Palazzo Pancrazi in Barga Vecchia.
Il loro volo acrobatico attraverso gli archi aperti e i passaggi della Volta è stato uno dei panorami più gloriosi di Barga in estate.
Più avanti in estate vediamo i loro giovani volteggiare rumorosamente intorno alla Volta del Menchi e poi poco dopo, la parte amara e malinconica in cui si siederanno in fila su alcuni dei fili tesi attraverso Barga Vecchia e poi una mattina spariranno tutti di nuovo.
Il ciclo si ripete ogni anno e non smette mai di sorprendere.
