On the 25th and 26th of August, the final evenings of the Festival were dedicated to the XXXIV Jazz Orchestra Arrangement and Composition Contest.
Started in 1986, it is one of the most prestigious in Europe and saw composers from all over Europe participating each year.
For 2023, the theme that contestants were called to confront was the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim. The Brazilian musician Hamilton De Holanda was the guest of the BargaJazz Orchestra, conducted by Mario Raja, on the 26th.
For Section B – original compositions, the following were admitted to the final phase:
Monique Chao – Hollow
Daniel Hofecker – Reshaped
Marco Battigelli – The Lovers’ Litany
Alessandro Presti – Marzo
Francesco Spinazza – Ninfalide
Tobias Hoffmann – Fresh Wind
At the end of the evening the jury decided that this year the winner of the Section B – original compositions was Daniel Hofecker – Reshaped
The orchestra could rightfully be defined as a breeding ground for new talents; its ranks included musicians who were then among the most appreciated on the national and international scenes.
Furthermore, it boasted numerous collaborations with prominent figures in the world of Jazz: Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Lee Konitz, Giorgio Gaslini, Kenny Wheeler, David Liebman, Tom Harrell, Steve Swallow, Pietro Tonolo, Dave Douglas, Maurizio Giammarco.
The 2023 Barga Jazz Orchestra was composed of: Andrea Tofanelli, Federico Trufelli, Andrea Guzzoletti, and Alessio Bianchi on trumpets; Roberto Rossi, Silvio Bernardi, Marcello Angeli, and Davide Guidi on trombones; Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, Renzo Cristiano Telloli, Moraldo Marcheschi, Alessandro Rizzardi, and Rossano Emili on saxophones; Stefano Onorati on piano, Angelo Lazzeri on guitar, Giacomo Riggi on vibraphone, Paolo Ghetti on double bass, and Stefano Paolini on drums.
The two evenings were presented by the singer Sara Maghelli.
The “incredible jam sessions” also returned, taking place after the concerts on the evenings of August 25th and 26th at the INDIE Distillery in San Pietro in Campo (Barga).

Alla fine della serata, la giuria ha deciso che quest’anno il vincitore della Sezione B – Composizioni originali è Daniel Hofecker con “Reshaped”.
L’orchestra poteva giustamente essere definita una fucina di nuovi talenti; tra le sue file vi erano musicisti che all’epoca erano tra i più apprezzati sulla scena nazionale e internazionale.
Inoltre, vantava numerose collaborazioni con figure di spicco nel mondo del Jazz: Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Lee Konitz, Giorgio Gaslini, Kenny Wheeler, David Liebman, Tom Harrell, Steve Swallow, Pietro Tonolo, Dave Douglas, Maurizio Giammarco.

Le due serate furono presentate dalla cantante Sara Maghelli.
Le “incredibili jam session” fecero anche il loro ritorno, tenendosi dopo i concerti nelle serate del 25 e 26 agosto presso la Distilleria INDIE a San Pietro in Campo (Barga).
