Barga celebrated its connection with Scotland with the “Barga Scottish Weekend,” a weekend organized and promoted by the Comune, Proloco, Unitre Barga, and Gatti Randagi, filled with events and initiatives where Scottish customs and traditions brought life to the streets and places of the Barga community.
From Friday, September 8th, to Sunday, September 10th, there was a focus on cuisine, culture, and tradition, involving local organizations, businesses, and associations.
In Scotland, a significant number of Barghigiani, who had emigrated for generations, still lived and worked. Over time, thanks to the unbreakable bond with this land, Barga became known as “The Most Scottish Town in Italy.” This was evidenced by typical Scottish dishes, such as the Fish & Chips Festival, bagpipe music in the streets during weddings, and the annual arrival of Scottish artists, as well as exhibitions by the world-renowned painter John Bellany.
Among the notable figures connected to this strong friendship was the pop star Paolo Nutini. Barga and Scotland, in short, had a very strong bond rooted in a history of emigration when many Barghigiani sought fortune in the British nation, only to return to Italy. This aspect characterized local emigration—the desire of these people to return to Barga and build their future and lives here. Today, some descendants are still in the UK, but especially in the summer, they would come to Barga to rediscover their history and roots, getting to know the land of their grandparents and great-grandparents up close. That’s why the Barga Scottish Weekend was not just folklore but, above all, an occasion to celebrate a long-standing friendship.
THE PROGRAM started on Friday, September 8th with the opening of stands in the historic center featuring typical products.
These stands were located in Piazza del Teatro, Piazza del Comune, Palazzo Balduini, Piazza Garibaldi, and Piazza del Sargentone.
Visitors could immerse themselves in the Scottish atmosphere with numerous stands, including Oro Di Scozia, Vintagetearoses & More, Taste Of Scotland, La Bottega Del Pane, Hoopsbeer, Clan Italia, Gatti Randagi, Barga Celtic Supporters Club, Vintage King, Bianca e Orso, Scozia Viaggi.
Musicians and dancers from Scotia Shores and Cateaters Pipe Band filled the streets and squares of the historic center with Scottish music and dance until the evening with a roaming performance. At 6 PM in the Palazzo Pancrazi, director Annalisa Losacco presented a preview of “Barga, the Most Scottish Town in Italy,” the documentary she created for GEO Rai3 about the history of Scottish emigration.
The first day concluded at Pizzeria Indie with a show featuring traditional Gaelic Scottish songs and Cape Breton Island dances by the Lionhead group.
The program resumed on Saturday, September 9th. Visitors could explore the stands while listening to the sound of bagpipes, admire traditional costumes, themed displays, and sample typical dishes offered in some local establishments.
At 3 PM, in the Palazzo Pancrazi, the book presentation of “The Way to Scotland – The Emigration of Barghigiani and Lucchese to Glasgow between the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries” by Nicoletta Franchi took place in collaboration with the Paolo Cresci Foundation.
At 4 PM, at the Volta dei Menchi, at the Museum of Rocks and Fortifications (MURF), there was an event called “Clouds of Scotland,” a discussion on the cultural value of comics with writer Massimo Tagino.
Also at 4 PM, at Palazzo Balduini, there was a mini-course and whisky tasting with Oro di Scozia. The groups of musicians and dancers from Scotia Shores and Cateaters Pipe Band returned to the stage at 5 PM with their roaming performance. At 5:30 PM in Piazza del Teatro, there was an “Aperibirra” event presented by Hoopsbeer, along with writer Gianluca Cettineo, who introduced his books related to Scottish and Irish football and culture, “The Poppy & the Lily and Derry CITY F.C. Football, Repression, and Revolt.”
The day continued with live Celtic music by the “On the Mend” group at 7 PM at Caffetteria La Volta and concluded at 9 PM on the terrace of the Museum Le Stanze della Memoria with Barga Ceilidh Dance – a Scottish dance evening with the Ceilitaly Ceilidh Band.
The grand finale took place on Sunday, September 10th. Once again visitors could explore the stands, enjoy the “Scottish Breakfast”, savour other typical dishes, and watch promotional videos by Scozia Viaggi.
At 11 AM, in the Palazzo Pancrazi, there was a conference titled “In the Heart of Scotland – Journey into the Traditions of a Unique Country” with Antonello Cattani and Paolo Gulisano.
At 1:30 PM, still at the Palazzo Pancrazi, there was “Rita’s Cupcakes Recipe” with Rita Luccherini, who explained her cupcake recipe. At 3 PM, in the historic center, there was a parade of bagpipes and drums by the Royal Highland Company Pipes & Drums. At 4 PM at Palazzo Balduini, Oro di Scozia repeated the mini-course with whisky tasting. The event concluded at 5 PM on the terrace of the Museum Le Stanze della Memoria with “A Scottish Dance Trip – Scottish Dances” by the Lucca Dance Society.
During the three-day event, visitors could taste typical products not only at the stands but also in local restaurants offering a special menu for the occasion.
Several exhibitions related to the connection between Scotland and Barga were also open during the weekend.
The John Bellany Gallery in Piazza Angelio had an ongoing exhibition curated by the Friends of John Bellany Association. In the Palazzo Pancrazi, there were panels dedicated to the Arandora Star and an exhibition in the historic center featuring photographs of Barga and Scotland. Meanwhile, in Via del Borgo, Petra Wend showcased her works with “Portraits” at the Municipal Gallery.

Barga ha celebrato il suo legame con la Scozia con il “Barga Scottish Weekend”, un fine settimana organizzato e promosso dal Comune, da Proloco, Unitre Barga e Gatti Randagi, ricco di eventi e iniziative in cui le usanze e le tradizioni scozzesi hanno animato le strade e i luoghi della comunità di Barga.
Dal venerdì 8 settembre alla domenica 10 settembre, c’è stato un focus sulla cucina, la cultura e la tradizione, coinvolgendo organizzazioni locali, imprese e associazioni.
In Scozia, un significativo numero di Barghigiani, che erano emigrati per generazioni, viveva ancora e lavorava. Nel corso del tempo, grazie al legame indissolubile con questa terra, Barga è diventata nota come “La Città più Scozzese d’Italia”. Questo è stato evidenziato dai piatti tipici scozzesi, come il Fish & Chips Festival, la musica delle cornamuse per le strade durante i matrimoni e l’arrivo annuale di artisti scozzesi, oltre alle mostre del rinomato pittore John Bellany.
Tra le figure di spicco legate a questa forte amicizia c’era anche la pop star Paolo Nutini. Barga e la Scozia, in breve, avevano un legame molto forte radicato in una storia di emigrazione in cui molti Barghigiani cercavano fortuna nella nazione britannica, solo per tornare in Italia. Questo aspetto ha caratterizzato l’emigrazione locale, il desiderio di queste persone di tornare a Barga e costruire qui il proprio futuro e le proprie vite. Oggi, alcuni discendenti sono ancora nel Regno Unito, ma soprattutto in estate, venivano a Barga per riscoprire la propria storia e le proprie radici, conoscendo da vicino la terra dei loro nonni e bisnonni. Ecco perché il Barga Scottish Weekend non era solo folklore, ma soprattutto un’occasione per celebrare una lunga e consolidata amicizia.
IL PROGRAMMA è iniziato il venerdì 8 settembre con l’apertura degli stand nel centro storico che presentavano prodotti tipici. Questi stand erano situati in Piazza del Teatro, Piazza del Comune, Palazzo Balduini, Piazza Garibaldi e Piazza del Sargentone.
I visitatori hanno potuto immergersi nell’atmosfera scozzese con numerosi stand, tra cui Oro Di Scozia, Vintagetearoses & More, Taste Of Scotland, La Bottega Del Pane, Hoopsbeer, Clan Italia, Gatti Randagi, Barga Celtic Supporters Club, Vintage King, Bianca e Orso, Scozia Viaggi.
Musicisti e ballerini di Scotia Shores e Cateaters Pipe Band hanno riempito le strade e le piazze del centro storico con musica e danze scozzesi fino alla sera, con uno spettacolo itinerante. Alle 18:00, nel Palazzo Pancrazi, il regista Annalisa Losacco ha presentato in anteprima “Barga, la Città più Scozzese d’Italia”, il documentario che ha realizzato per GEO Rai3 sulla storia dell’emigrazione scozzese.
La prima giornata si è conclusa presso la Pizzeria Indie con uno spettacolo di canzoni tradizionali scozzesi in gaelico e danze dell’Isola di Cape Breton a cura del gruppo Lionhead.
Il programma è ripreso il sabato 9 settembre. A partire dalle 10:00, i visitatori hanno potuto esplorare gli stand mentre ascoltavano il suono delle cornamuse, ammirare costumi tradizionali, esposizioni a tema e assaporare piatti tipici offerti in alcuni locali.
Alle 15:00, nell’atrio del Palazzo Pancrazi, si è tenuta la presentazione del libro “La Via della Scozia – L’Emigrazione dei Barghigiani e dei Lucchesi a Glasgow tra il XIX e il XX secolo” di Nicoletta Franchi in collaborazione con la Fondazione Paolo Cresci.
Alle 16:00, presso la Volta dei Menchi, nel Museo delle rocche e delle fortificazioni (MURF), c’è stato un appuntamento con “Nuvole di Scozia”, un dibattito sul valore culturale del fumetto a cura dello scrittore Massimo Tagino. Sempre alle 16:00, a Palazzo Balduini, c’è stato un mini-corso e una degustazione di whisky con Oro di Scozia.
I gruppi di musicisti e ballerini di Scotia Shores e Cateaters Pipe Band sono tornati sul palco alle 17:00 con il loro spettacolo itinerante. Alle 17:30, in Piazza del Teatro, c’è stata l’Aperibirra proposta da Hoopsbeer insieme allo scrittore Gianluca Cettineo, che ha presentato i suoi libri legati al calcio scozzese e irlandese e al contesto culturale, “The Poppy & the Lily e Derry CITY F.C. Calcio, Repressione e Rivolta”.
La giornata è proseguita con musica celtica dal vivo a cura del gruppo “On the Mend” alle 19:00 presso la Caffetteria La Volta e si è conclusa alle 21:00 sulla terrazza del Museo Le Stanze della Memoria con il Barga Ceilidh Dance – una serata di danze scozzesi con la Ceilitaly Ceilidh Band.
Il gran finale ha avuto luogo domenica 10 settembre. Ancora una volta, i visitatori hanno potuto esplorare gli stand, gustare la “Colazione Scozzese”, assaporare altri piatti tipici e guardare video promozionali a cura di Scozia Viaggi.
Alle 11:00, nell’atrio del Palazzo Pancrazi, è stata proposta la conferenza “Nel Cuore della Scozia – Viaggio nelle Tradizioni di un Paese Unico al Mondo” con Antonello Cattani e Paolo Gulisano.
Alle 13:30, sempre presso la Casa Comunale, c’è stata la presentazione di “Rita’s Cupcakes Recipe” con Rita Luccherini, che ha spiegato la sua ricetta per i cupcakes. Alle 15:00, nel centro storico, c’è stata una sfilata di cornamuse e tamburi a cura dei Royal Highland Company Pipes & Drums.
Alle 16:00, a Palazzo Balduini, Oro di Scozia ha riproposto il mini-corso e la degustazione di whisky. La rassegna si è conclusa alle 17:00 sulla terrazza del Museo Le Stanze della Memoria con “A Scottish Dance Trip – Balli Scozzesi” della Società di Danza di Lucca.
Durante il tre giorni, i visitatori hanno potuto gustare prodotti tipici non solo agli stand, ma anche nei ristoranti locali che offrivano un menù speciale per l’occasione.
MOSTRE. Durante il fine settimana erano aperte diverse mostre legate al legame tra la Scozia e Barga.
La Galleria John Bellany in Piazza Angelio ospitava una mostra permanente a cura dell’Associazione Amici di John Bellany. Nell’atrio del Palazzo Comunale c’erano pannelli dedicati all’Arandora Star e un percorso espositivo nel centro storico con fotografie di Barga e della Scozia. Nel frattempo, in Via del Borgo, Petra Wend esponeva le sue opere con “Ritratti” presso la Galleria Comunale.
