A concert by the “Gaetano Luporini” Philharmonic Orchestra of Barga in the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga Vecchia to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the first band in Barga.
This event, part of the celebrations for the bicentennial anniversary of the founding of the first Barga band was the result of collaboration between the Philharmonic itself, the Comune of Barga, the Lucchese Historical Institute – Barga Section, and Anbima Aps – Provincial Presidency of Lucca.
The Philharmonic of Barga has marked two centuries of the region’s history with its music and performances. It was back in 1823 when a musical band was founded in Barga on the initiative of some affluent families in the city.
The founding date is known from a letter dated May 3, 1846, written to the Barga Community by two individuals who reported a serious threat to its survival: the bandmaster Marcello Cardosi Mazzolini and his deputy Antonio Cardosi Bartolini, who sought public assistance from the community.
From this letter, we learn that “since 1823, a Harmonic Corps was established in this land of Barga (…). This honorable society is diminishing day by day, and given the death of those individuals who, with their wealth, supported its economic prosperity and ensured its smooth operation, and considering the old age of others who are now naturally unfit and have declined to continue being part of it.”
In practice, to prevent the dissolution of the band, the only solution, following the example of what was done elsewhere in the Grand Duchy, was for the community to provide financial support to the local band.
In 1872, at Giuseppe Mazzini’s funeral in Pisa, the Barga Band, along with Livorno’s band, led the funeral procession accompanying the politician’s remains.
Later, towards the end of the 19th century, the band was joined by the Angelio Fanfare, forming two distinct musical groups that eventually merged in 1912 to create a single musical entity: the “Gaetano Luporini Municipal Band,” which still exists today.
The Luporini, led by capable presidents and conductors, was active until 1962, when there was a long interruption of 37 years, and it resumed its activities in April 2000.
It was directed by Andrea Guzzoletti for two years, followed by Chiara Lorenzi, Gemma Adorni, and currently Rossano Emili.

“Un concerto dell’Orchestra Filarmonica “Gaetano Luporini” di Barga al Teatro dei Differenti in Barga Vecchia per celebrare il 200º anniversario della fondazione della prima banda a Barga.
Questo evento, parte delle celebrazioni per il bicentenario della fondazione della prima banda di Barga, è stato il risultato della collaborazione tra la Filarmonica stessa, il Comune di Barga, l’Istituto Storico Lucchese – Sezione di Barga e Anbima Aps – Presidenza Provinciale di Lucca.
La Filarmonica di Barga ha segnato due secoli di storia della regione con la sua musica e le sue esibizioni. Risale al 1823 la fondazione di una banda musicale a Barga su iniziativa di alcune famiglie facoltose della città.
La data di fondazione è nota da una lettera datata 3 maggio 1846, scritta alla Comunità di Barga da due individui che segnalavano una grave minaccia alla sua sopravvivenza: il maestro di banda Marcello Cardosi Mazzolini e il suo vice Antonio Cardosi Bartolini, che chiedevano assistenza pubblica dalla comunità.
Da questa lettera apprendiamo che “dal 1823 è stato istituito in questa terra di Barga un Corpo Armonico (…). Questa onorevole società si sta riducendo giorno dopo giorno, considerata la scomparsa di coloro che, con la loro ricchezza, sostenevano la sua prosperità economica e ne garantivano il regolare funzionamento, e considerata l’età avanzata di altri che ora sono naturalmente inadatti e hanno rinunciato a continuare a farne parte”.
In pratica, per evitare lo scioglimento della banda, l’unica soluzione, seguendo l’esempio di quanto fatto altrove nel Granducato, era che la comunità fornisse un sostegno finanziario alla banda locale.
Nel 1872, ai funerali di Giuseppe Mazzini a Pisa, la Banda di Barga, insieme alla banda di Livorno, guidò il corteo funebre accompagnando i resti del politico.
Successivamente, verso la fine del XIX secolo, alla banda si unì la Fanfara Angelio, formando due gruppi musicali distinti che alla fine si fusero nel 1912 per creare un’unica entità musicale: la “Banda Comunale Gaetano Luporini”, ancora attiva oggi.
La Luporini, guidata da capaci presidenti e direttori, fu attiva fino al 1962, quando ci fu una lunga interruzione di 37 anni; riprese le attività nell’aprile del 2000.
È stata diretta da Andrea Guzzoletti per due anni, seguito da Chiara Lorenzi, Gemma Adorni e attualmente da Rossano Emili.”
