Many articles have been published on barganews since 2013, when Selma Sevenhuijsen, a researcher from Amsterdam, Netherlands (recently deceased), arrived in the city specifically to see for herself the image of the bare-breasted twin-tailed mermaid in the Duomo. (these articles can be seen here)
This creature is associated with numerous stories and legends and is imbued with symbolic meaning in alchemy. The most common iteration of the siren is as Melusine, a creature from medieval legend. Melusine (sometimes Melusina) was, according to legend, a beautiful woman with a disturbing tendency to transform into a serpent from the waist down while bathing; it is the discovery of this nature that triggers calamity (article here)
This week a group of Dutch friends and colleagues of Selma were in Barga to posthumously present her last book “La Sirena e il Volto Santo” at the Lucca Book Fair at the Real Collegio in Lucca.

This afternoon we held our presentations in connection with the Italian edition of the Siren and the Volto Santo. Everything turned out fantastic. After finishing, enthusiastic listeners came to us to get more information and to buy books at booth 36 of Effigi Publisher. Mario Papalini has excellently introduced us and memorialized Selma Sevenhuijsen. It was a golden-rim kind of day. – Gerthe Lamers

Questa pomeriggio abbiamo tenuto le nostre presentazioni in connessione con l’edizione italiana de La Sirena e il Volto Santo. Tutto è stato fantastico. Dopo aver finito, degli ascoltatori entusiasti sono venuti da noi per avere ulteriori informazioni e per acquistare libri allo stand 36 dell’Editore Effigi. Sinds 2013 zijn er veel artikelen gepubliceerd op barganews, toen Selma Sevenhuijsen, een onderzoeker uit Amsterdam, Nederland (recentelijk overleden), speciaal naar de stad kwam om met haar eigen ogen het beeld van de naakte, dubbelstaartige zeemeermin in de Duomo te zien. Dit wezen wordt geassocieerd met talloze verhalen en legendes en is doordrenkt van symbolische betekenis in de alchemie. De meest voorkomende iteratie van de sirene is als Melusine, een wezen uit middeleeuwse legendes. Melusine (soms Melusina genoemd) was volgens de legende een mooie vrouw met de verontrustende neiging om in een slang te veranderen vanaf haar middel naar beneden tijdens het baden; het is de ontdekking van deze aard die rampspoed veroorzaakt (artikel hier)
