Barga played host to an afternoon of remembrance and celebration in honour of one of Italy’s most cherished composers, Giacomo Puccini. The event, held at the historic Teatro dei Differenti, was not just a nod to the world-renowned maestro, but also to the intricate connections between Puccini and the poet Giovanni Pascoli.
The afternoon began with the presentation of a new book by local historian Pier Giuliano Cecchi, titled “Puccini and Pascoli at the End of the 19th Century and the Death of the Poet.” This carefully researched work serves as a tribute to Puccini on the centenary of his death, delving into the rich relationship between these two influential figures. As Cecchi explained through his book, the worlds of music and poetry intertwined in ways that have left a lasting legacy in Barga.

Musician Massimo Salotti and historian Sara Moscardini, both respected in their fields, led the presentation. Their reflections, based on Cecchi’s meticulous research, gave the audience a deeper appreciation for the ways these two giants of Italian culture impacted not only each other but also the city of Barga.
One of the day’s highlights was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the theatre. This plaque immortalises Puccini’s presence at the Teatro dei Differenti on a significant day in the town’s history—October 6, 1912, when Pascoli was posthumously honoured in the very same theatre, six months after his death. It was a ceremony marked by the presence of Puccini himself, who followed Pascoli’s casket during the poet’s final journey from the cemetery in Barga to the Colle di Caprona.

Barga ha ospitato un pomeriggio di ricordo e celebrazione in onore di uno dei compositori più amati d’Italia, Giacomo Puccini. L’evento, tenutosi nello storico Teatro dei Differenti, non è stato solo un tributo al maestro di fama mondiale, ma anche un riconoscimento ai legami intricati tra Puccini e il poeta Giovanni Pascoli.
Il pomeriggio è iniziato con la presentazione di un nuovo libro dello storico locale Pier Giuliano Cecchi, intitolato “Puccini e Pascoli tra la fine del XIX secolo e la morte del poeta.” Questa opera attentamente ricercata rappresenta un omaggio a Puccini nel centenario della sua morte, esplorando la ricca relazione tra queste due figure influenti. Come ha spiegato Cecchi nel suo libro, i mondi della musica e della poesia si intrecciarono in modi che hanno lasciato un’eredità duratura a Barga.
Il musicista Massimo Salotti e la storica Sara Moscardini, entrambi rispettati nei loro campi, hanno guidato la presentazione. Le loro riflessioni, basate sulla meticolosa ricerca di Cecchi, hanno offerto al pubblico una comprensione più profonda del modo in cui questi due giganti della cultura italiana influenzarono non solo l’uno l’altro, ma anche la città di Barga.
Uno dei momenti salienti della giornata è stato lo svelamento di una targa commemorativa nel teatro. Questa targa immortala la presenza di Puccini al Teatro dei Differenti in un giorno significativo nella storia della città—il 6 ottobre 1912, quando Pascoli fu onorato postumamente nello stesso teatro, sei mesi dopo la sua morte. Fu una cerimonia segnata dalla presenza dello stesso Puccini, che seguì il feretro di Pascoli durante il suo ultimo viaggio dal cimitero di Barga al Colle di Caprona.
