Monte Forato is a mountain in the Apuan Alps which has two peaks of similar height and size, little more than 1.200 mts but the feature which gives the name of this mountain is the presence of a natural arch between the two peaks formed by the erosion of water and wind on the limestone .
The hole measures about 30 meters in diameter and the thickness of the rock which forms the arch is about 8 meters.
It is therefore considered one of the largest natural arches in Italy.
If the conditions are right and you are in the right place at the right time, it is possible twice a year, on the 30th – 31st January and the 11th – 12th November to see the doppio tramonto – the double sunset viewed from outside the Duomo in Barga Vecchia.
This is when the sun drops down behind the mountains in the distance and then shines through the natural arch of the Monte Forato.
This eagerly awaited event generally draws a crowd at the Duomo as they wait for the sun to dip below the horizon, only to re-appear seconds later.
The year there was ample publicity about the event across the internet but most of it was advertising the day of the event as Sunday the 10th November – a full day early. In fact there were a couple of hundred people waiting for the double sunset up at the Duomo but were rewarded for their wait with just a slight touch of the sun inside the natural arch of the Monte Forato.
Tomorrow if the weather hold up it should be a better possibility of seeing the full spectacular natural event.

Il Monte Forato è una montagna delle Alpi Apuane che ha due cime di altezza e dimensioni simili, poco più di 1200 metri, ma la caratteristica che dà il nome alla montagna è la presenza di un arco naturale tra le due vette, formato dall’erosione dell’acqua e del vento sul calcare.
L’apertura misura circa 30 metri di diametro e lo spessore della roccia che forma l’arco è di circa 8 metri.
È quindi considerato uno dei più grandi archi naturali d’Italia.
Se le condizioni sono favorevoli e ci si trova nel posto giusto al momento giusto, è possibile, due volte l’anno, il 30-31 gennaio e l’11-12 novembre, osservare il doppio tramonto, visibile dall’esterno del Duomo di Barga Vecchia.
In questo momento, il sole scende dietro le montagne in lontananza e poi riappare brillando attraverso l’arco naturale del Monte Forato.
Questo evento, atteso con impazienza, attira generalmente una folla al Duomo, dove le persone aspettano che il sole si abbassi sotto l’orizzonte, solo per riapparire pochi secondi dopo.
Quest’anno c’è stata una grande pubblicità su internet riguardo all’evento, ma la maggior parte di essa lo annunciava come se fosse domenica 10 novembre, con un giorno intero di anticipo. Di fatto, c’erano un paio di centinaia di persone in attesa del doppio tramonto al Duomo, che hanno visto solo un leggero bagliore del sole attraverso l’arco naturale del Monte Forato.
Domani, se il tempo si mantiene, ci sarà una migliore possibilità di assistere all’intero spettacolare evento naturale.
