Eddie Henderson (also known as “Mganga” in Mwandishi circles) received his first trumpet lesson from Louis Armstrong at the age of nine. A major inspiration for Henderson was Miles Davis, a family friend whom he met at 17 and who encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Henderson, however, also continued his university studies, graduating first in zoology and then in medicine at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and specialising in psychiatry.
During those years he kept playing part-time, studying the trumpet and performing in concerts, meeting Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. A decisive turning point in his career was his encounter and collaboration with Herbie Hancock, with whom he worked from 1970 to 1973 in the Mwandishi band and with whom he recorded his first albums, Realization (1972) and Inside Out (1973). After leaving Hancock, Henderson collaborated with Pharoah Sanders, Norman Connors and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. In 1975 he joined the Latin-jazz group Azteca.
Over his career he has played with some of the most important names in jazz, including Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Dexter Gordon and Roy Haynes, among others. As an educator he taught at the Juilliard School of Music from 2007 to 2016 and in the jazz department at Oberlin University from 2014, where he was promoted to full professor in 2023.
A documentary about his life, titled Doctor Eddie Henderson: Uncommon Genius, was broadcast by several television networks and screened at various film festivals from February 2024.
The BargaJazz Orchestra reconvened for the competition and was made up of 18 well-knit musicians who, in a few days of rehearsals, managed to prepare a brand-new repertoire based on arrangements and original compositions.
