“From the Past to the Future, between Art and History”
This afternoon in the Palazzo Pancrazi in Barga Vecchia, Lorenzo Marcuccetti presented his latest book, Lucca e Luni – Twin Cities, Opposite Destinies: From Their Founding to the High Middle Ages.
The event, organised by Oxocurators and sponsored by the City of Barga, also featured the participation of Emanuele Giannelli, the renowned artist recognised nationally and internationally.
Lorenzo and Emanuele held a dialogue like a journey through History and Art – sharing their literary and creative experiences and exploring their visions of the past, the present, and the future.
The founding, development, and divergent destinies of Lucca (Luca) and Luni (Luna) are recounted through the analysis of sources, archival documents, archaeological data, and 1,985 toponyms that bear witness to a centuries-long layering of cultures (Roman, Gothic, Byzantine, Lombard) across nearly a thousand years of history.
This is a meticulous work of research, cataloguing, and the etymological analysis of place-names, viewed as litmus tests for reading a territory in historical terms. The volume represents the culmination of years of scrupulous study and passionate investigation, but also a starting point for new and stimulating pages of scholarship, a valuable contribution to further and more in-depth scientific analyses.
Two twin cities, founded as Roman colonies in 180 and 177 BC respectively, began their long history hand in hand, then gradually drifted apart until they followed two opposite paths: the first towards a future that would see it establish itself as a regional power, the second towards oblivion, consigned to the ashes of history.
The evening concluded with a visit to Emanuele Giannelli’s works, which were on display at OXOCOLLECTION – The Gallery until 31 October.

Dal passato al futuro, tra Arte e Storia
Questo pomeriggio, a Palazzo Pancrazi in Barga Vecchia, Lorenzo Marcuccetti ha presentato il suo ultimo libro, Lucca e Luni – Città gemelle, destini opposti: dalla fondazione all’alto Medioevo.
L’evento, organizzato da Oxocurators e patrocinato dal Comune di Barga, ha visto anche la partecipazione di Emanuele Giannelli, noto artista riconosciuto a livello nazionale e internazionale.
Lorenzo ed Emanuele hanno tenuto un dialogo come un viaggio tra Storia e Arte, condividendo le loro esperienze letterarie e creative ed esplorando le loro visioni del passato, del presente e del futuro.
La fondazione, lo sviluppo e gli opposti destini di Lucca (Luca) e Luni (Luna) raccontati attraverso l’analisi di fonti, carte d’archivio, dati archeologici e 1.985 toponimi che testimoniano una secolare sedimentazione di culture (romana, gota, bizantina, longobarda) succedutesi in quasi mille anni di storia. Un certosino lavoro di ricerca, catalogazione ed analisi etimologica dei nomi di luogo visti come cartine al tornasole per la lettura in chiave storica di un territorio.
Un volume che rappresenta il punto di approdo di anni di studi scrupolosi ed indagini appassionate, ma anche il punto di partenza per nuove e stimolanti pagine di letteratura, un prezioso contributo per ulteriori e più approfondite analisi scientifiche.
Due città gemelle, nate come colonie romane rispettivamente nel 180 e 177 a.C., che avevano iniziato la loro lunga storia dandosi la mano, poi allontanatesi gradualmente fino a percorrere due strade opposte: la prima verso un futuro che la vedrà affermarsi come potenza regionale, la seconda verso l’oblio, inghiottita dalle ceneri della Storia.
La serata si è conclusa con la visita alle opere di Emanuele Giannelli, esposte presso OXOCOLLECTION – The Gallery fino al 31 ottobre.
