Watercolours and etchings by Tony Phillips
The works of Venice were created during a visit made in May 2024. They are watercolours and pen-and-ink. The works of Barga comprise watercolours from the period 1996 -2020 and also a large pastel drawing made specifically for this exhibition as a homage to Barga – a large pastel drawing of Fornaci di Barga, made as the draft for a permanent poster currently displayed in Piazza IV Novembre ( commissioned by the Comune di Barga for ‘Le Porte di Barga’ curated by Sandra Rigali, 2023) – an etching ‘Barga Jazz’, 2019.
The works of London – all etchings – were originally created for a commission from the Museum of London in 1998, tracing the historical development of the city. Then, the theme was extended during the period 2001 to 2012, becoming a social survey of contemporary London.
The exhibition includes 3 etchings from the series ‘ Thames sequence ‘ 11 images developed from a single etching plate ( shown in the glass case ) Many of the etchings were printed in Barga at the etching studio of Nick Kraczyna.
Tony Phillips – born in Liverpool in 1952. He studied mural painting at Lancaster Art College, graduating in 1972. He remained in Lancaster until 1977, working as an artist involved in street theatre, community work and social activism. In 1977 Phillips made the decision to move closer to London, and relocated to Shrewsbury, where he remained until 2001, before moving to Italy.
Tony Phillips was involved in the seminal exhibitions Black Art: Plotting the Course, (1988) and History of Identity (1991) both curated by Eddie Chambers, who worked tirelessly to widen the spectrum of black artistic practice.
Tony Phillips’ work has explored themes of consumerism, capitalism, the dislocation of the human from nature, the nude, history, the passage of time and the visual, the role of the individual in society, and painted and printed images of Liverpool, UK. India exhibition link here Though, essentially a sculpturist by education and landscape artist by profession, illustration is also an important part of Tony’s artistic entity now. “Drawing is a good medium to make a comment on society and I love to capture the changing trends of society, people’s struggling at different levels to go along with those changes as well as their weaknesses and failures,” says Tony. Tony uses pen and wash technique to execute his ideas — strong focused lines to tell his story and water colour background for that added drama. “Lines play an important part in the whole saga as it gives rhythm to a drawing. The rest comes from layering of colours,” he explains.

Poi, il tema era estesa durante il periodo 2001 a 2012, diventando un indagine sociale di Londra contemporanea La mostra include 3 incisioni dalla sequenza ‘Thames’ – 11 imagine sviluppato da un unica lastra. ( esposta nella vetrina)

Tony Phillips – nato a Liverpool nel 1952. Ha studiato pittura murale al Lancaster Art College, diplomandosi nel 1972. Rimase a Lancaster fino al 1977, lavorando come artista impegnato nel teatro di strada, nel lavoro comunitario e nell’attivismo sociale. Nel 1977 Phillips decise di trasferirsi più vicino a Londra e si stabilì a Shrewsbury, dove rimase fino al 2001, per poi trasferirsi in Italia.
Tony Phillips ha partecipato a mostre fondamentali come Black Art: Plotting the Course (1988) e History of Identity (1991), entrambe curate da Eddie Chambers, che lavorò instancabilmente per ampliare lo spettro della pratica artistica nera. Il lavoro di
Tony Phillips ha esplorato temi come il consumismo, il capitalismo, il distacco dell’essere umano dalla natura, il nudo, la storia, il passare del tempo e il visivo, il ruolo dell’individuo nella società, oltre a immagini dipinte e stampate di Liverpool, UK. Link alla mostra in India qui Pur essendo essenzialmente uno scultore per formazione e un paesaggista per professione, oggi l’illustrazione rappresenta una parte importante dell’identità artistica di Tony. “Il disegno è un buon mezzo per commentare la società e amo catturare i cambiamenti delle sue tendenze, le difficoltà delle persone a diversi livelli nell’adattarsi a questi cambiamenti, così come le loro debolezze e i loro fallimenti”, dice Tony. Tony utilizza la tecnica della penna con acquerello per dare forma alle sue idee: linee forti e decise per raccontare la sua storia e uno sfondo ad acquerello per aggiungere drammaticità. “Le linee giocano un ruolo importante nell’intera narrazione, perché danno ritmo a un disegno. Il resto viene dalla sovrapposizione dei colori”, spiega.
