A Night to Remember – Barga’s Theatre Tribute to Its Scottish Emigrants
The Teatro dei Differenti was the place to be this evening as the last event of this year’s Scottish Weekend celebrations took place with the production of the play, “Il Primetto è ito in Scozia”, written and directed by Gioconda Lorenzini and performed by the Gruppo Volontari della Solidarietà (GVS)
It was a celebration of community talent involving heartfelt emotion, local pride, and a story deeply woven into the town’s cultural fabric. The work explored the theme of emigration from Barga to Scotland, a subject that continues to resonate strongly with many families in the area. The performance paid tribute to those who left their Tuscan homeland in search of opportunity, and to the enduring bonds between Barga and the Scottish towns that became a second home for many.
The group was supported behind the scenes and on stage by other GVS volunteers, along with Cristina Saisi, who contributed to the production’s overall atmosphere.
The direction by Lorenzini was both sensitive and skilful, balancing humour and nostalgia while highlighting the resilience of those who made the journey north. It was a night that reminded everyone in the audience that the stories of the past are still very much alive — and that theatre remains one of the most powerful ways to tell them.

Una notte da ricordare – L’omaggio teatrale di Barga ai suoi emigrati in Scozia
Il Teatro dei Differenti è stato il luogo clou di questa sera, con l’evento conclusivo della Settimana Scozzese: la messa in scena dello spettacolo «Il Primetto è ito in Scozia», scritto e diretto da Gioconda Lorenzini e interpretato dal Gruppo Volontari della Solidarietà (GVS).
È stata una celebrazione del talento della comunità, fatta di emozione sincera, orgoglio locale e una storia profondamente intrecciata nel tessuto culturale della città. L’opera ha esplorato il tema dell’emigrazione da Barga verso la Scozia, un argomento che continua a toccare da vicino molte famiglie della zona. La performance ha reso omaggio a coloro che lasciarono la loro terra toscana in cerca di opportunità e ai legami duraturi tra Barga e le città scozzesi che per molti divennero una seconda casa.
Il gruppo è stato sostenuto dietro le quinte e in scena da altri volontari del GVS, insieme a Cristina Saisi, che ha contribuito all’atmosfera complessiva della produzione.
La regia di Lorenzini è stata al tempo stesso sensibile e sapiente, capace di bilanciare umorismo e nostalgia, mettendo in risalto la resilienza di chi intraprese il viaggio verso nord.
È stata una serata che ha ricordato a tutti i presenti che le storie del passato sono ancora vive — e che il teatro resta uno dei modi più potenti per raccontarle.
