The encyclopedia description of the Presepio is a three dimensional representation of the birth of Jesus Christ, composed of mobile figures arranged according to the artistic sense of the builder as well as realistic elements such as houses, rocks, plants etc.
As such the Presepio is closely related to the theatre because it intends to render an event remote in time and space present and real by means of fiction of a spectacular nature and at the same time, like the theatre, it cannot be separated from the scenery.
None of which prepares you for the Presepes that Sacco built in Barga every year .
Normally the presepio contains about ten characters Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, the three wise men, a shepherd and a few animals but he managed to slip in (almost) unnoticed modern plastic figures.
In 2008, the year before he died , within the last one he ever constructed, he managed to surpassed himself with a nativity scene which included Disney Seven Dwarfs, waterfalls and flashing LED lights.
The irony of seeing gnomes incorporated into a traditional presepe was not lost on some of the smaller inhabitants of Barga. Especially as Sacco was the spokesman for the the Europe Gnome Sanctuary

That presepe was made specially to fit in the window of Da Aristo in Barga Vecchia and was until recently lit up every 8th December at the start of the christmas season.
That tradition unfortunately was not kept and Sacco’s presepe was no longer an important part of the celebrations.
Last year it was removed and taken to Keane’s studio where it was gradually dismantled and old wiring removed, new lights and wiring installed and once again returned to its original glory and then installed in its original posution in the window of Da Aristo.
Last night at 6 pm it was switched on to a round of applause – tradition has been upheld and once again Sacco’s work can be admired.
With one or two small additions it has also been entered into the first edition of the “Presepi d’Artista” Contemporary Art Competition, an initiative that aims to enhance the tradition of the nativity scene through contemporary art organised by the Comune di Barga .
The aim of the competition was to invite artists and students from art schools and academies, of any age and nationality, as long as they work in Italy, to create nativity scenes as sculptural compositions inspired by the Nativity scene.
The tradition of the nativity scene is deeply rooted in this area.
The works would express a contemporary artistic language, reinterpreting the tradition of depicting the nativity scene in an innovative and reflective way.
Each “Presepe d’Artista” could convey religious, environmental, ethical, social, or cultural messages, including protests, while fully respecting the diversity of thought.
The aim was to stimulate reflection on contemporary art and its role in society.

La descrizione enciclopedica del Presepio parla di una rappresentazione tridimensionale della nascita di Gesù Cristo, composta da figure mobili disposte secondo il senso artistico del costruttore e da elementi realistici come case, rocce, piante, ecc.
In questo senso, il Presepio è strettamente legato al teatro, poiché intende rendere presente e reale — tramite la finzione spettacolare — un evento lontano nel tempo e nello spazio; e, proprio come il teatro, non può essere separato dalla scenografia.
Niente di tutto questo, però, prepara ai Presepi che Sacco costruiva ogni anno a Barga.
Normalmente un presepio contiene una decina di personaggi: Maria, Giuseppe, il Bambino Gesù, i tre Re Magi, un pastore e pochi animali. Ma lui riusciva a inserire, quasi inosservate, figure moderne di plastica.
Nel 2008, l’anno prima che morisse, all’interno dell’ultimo presepe che realizzò, superò sé stesso con una Natività che includeva i Sette Nani della Disney, cascate e luci LED lampeggianti.
L’ironia di vedere gnomi inseriti in un presepe tradizionale non sfuggì ai più piccoli abitanti di Barga.
Soprattutto perché Sacco era il portavoce del Europe Gnome Sanctuary.

Quel presepe era stato costruito appositamente per la finestra del Da Aristo in Barga Vecchia e fino a poco tempo fa veniva acceso ogni 8 dicembre, all’inizio della stagione natalizia.
Quella tradizione, purtroppo, non è stata mantenuta e il presepe di Sacco non era più considerato una parte importante delle celebrazioni.
L’anno scorso è stato rimosso e portato nello studio di Keane, dove è stato gradualmente smontato: i vecchi cavi sono stati eliminati, sono state installate nuove luci e nuovi collegamenti, e il presepe è stato riportato al suo splendore originale, per poi essere reinstallato nella sua posizione originale nella finestra del Da Aristo.
Ieri sera, alle 18, è stato acceso tra gli applausi — la tradizione è stata ristabilita e ancora una volta si può ammirare il lavoro di Sacco.
Con una o due piccole aggiunte, è stato inoltre presentato alla prima edizione del concorso di Arte Contemporanea “Presepi d’Artista”, un’iniziativa del Comune di Barga che mira a valorizzare la tradizione del presepe attraverso l’arte contemporanea.
L’obiettivo del concorso era invitare artisti e studenti di scuole d’arte e accademie, di qualsiasi età e nazionalità, purché operanti in Italia, a creare presepi come composizioni scultoree ispirate alla Natività.
La tradizione del presepe è profondamente radicata in questo territorio.
Le opere dovevano esprimere un linguaggio artistico contemporaneo, reinterpretando in modo innovativo e riflessivo la tradizione della rappresentazione della Natività.
Ogni “Presepe d’Artista” poteva trasmettere messaggi religiosi, ambientali, etici, sociali o culturali, incluso il dissenso, nel pieno rispetto della diversità di pensiero.
Lo scopo era stimolare la riflessione sull’arte contemporanea e sul suo ruolo nella società.
