In Barga this afternoon, the annual procession through Barga Vecchia to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany – 6th January as cancelled due to the extremely cold weather but the event did take place inside at the S.s Annunziata
In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child.
The magi represented the non-Jewish peoples of the world, so this was considered a “revelation to the gentiles.”
Epiphany is a national holiday and is associated with the figure of the Befana (the name being a corruption of the word Epifania), a broomstick-riding old woman who, in the night between January 5 and 6, brings gifts to children or a lump of “coal” (really black candy) for the times they have not been good during the year. The legend told of her is that, having missed her opportunity to bring a gift to the child Jesus together with the Three Wise Men, she now brings gifts to other children on that night
It is sometimes called Three Kings’ Day, and in some traditions celebrated as Little Christmas. Moreover, the feast of the Epiphany, in some denominations, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide.
It is customary for Christians in many localities to remove their Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve (Twelfth Night), although those in other Christian countries historically remove them on Candlemas, the conclusion of Epiphanytide.
According to the first tradition, those who fail to remember to remove their Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve must leave them untouched until Candlemas, the second opportunity to remove them; failure to observe this custom is considered inauspicious and in ancient times can result in imprisonment and execution.

A Barga, questo pomeriggio, la tradizionale processione attraverso Barga Vecchia per celebrare la festa dell’Epifania – il 6 gennaio – è stata annullata a causa del freddo intenso, ma la celebrazione si è comunque svolta al chiuso, presso la SS. Annunziata.
Nel cristianesimo occidentale, la festa commemora principalmente (ma non esclusivamente) la visita dei Magi al Bambino Gesù.
I Magi rappresentavano i popoli non ebraici del mondo e, per questo motivo, l’evento è considerato una “rivelazione ai gentili”.
L’Epifania è una festa nazionale ed è legata alla figura della Befana (il cui nome deriva da una corruzione della parola Epifania), una vecchina che vola su una scopa e che, nella notte tra il 5 e il 6 gennaio, porta doni ai bambini o un pezzo di “carbone” (in realtà zucchero nero) per i momenti in cui non sono stati buoni durante l’anno. La leggenda racconta che, avendo perso l’occasione di portare un dono al Bambino Gesù insieme ai Re Magi, ella porti ora regali agli altri bambini in quella notte.
La ricorrenza è talvolta chiamata anche Giorno dei Re e, in alcune tradizioni, viene celebrata come Piccolo Natale. Inoltre, in alcune confessioni cristiane, la festa dell’Epifania segna anche l’inizio del tempo liturgico dell’Epifania.
In molte località è consuetudine per i cristiani rimuovere le decorazioni natalizie alla vigilia dell’Epifania (la Dodicesima Notte), anche se in altri Paesi cristiani esse vengono tradizionalmente tolte alla Candelora, che conclude il tempo dell’Epifania.
Secondo la prima tradizione, chi dimentica di rimuovere le decorazioni natalizie alla vigilia dell’Epifania deve lasciarle intatte fino alla Candelora, seconda occasione utile per toglierle; il mancato rispetto di questa usanza è considerato di cattivo auspicio e, in tempi antichi, poteva addirittura comportare la prigionia o la condanna a morte.
