What was meant to be an ordinary day in Barga Vecchia became something altogether different when Keane — artist, founder of barganews, and long-time observer of the city’s life — walked unsuspectingly past Da Aristo. The bar was supposed to be closed. The piazza was empty. Nothing hinted at what was about to unfold.
Then the lights came on and as the door opened, the unmistakable sound of music filled the air as the Aristodemos began to play. Surprise gave way to laughter, laughter to embraces, and just like that, a celebration was born.
The evening marked Keane’s seventieth birthday — though “marked” feels too small a word. It was an ambush of affection, orchestrated with warmth and secrecy by his daughter Melanie, together with a circle of close friends and the ever-welcoming team at Da Aristo – a place woven deeply into the social fabric of Barga Vecchia, once again proved what such spaces truly represent. Not just a bar, but a meeting point, a refuge, a stage, a living room for the city.
Keane, who has spent decades documenting Barga through words, photographs, and paintings, found himself — briefly and beautifully — on the other side of the lens.

Quella che doveva essere una giornata qualunque a Barga Vecchia è diventata qualcosa di completamente diverso quando Keane — artista, fondatore di Barganews e osservatore da sempre della vita della città — è passato davanti a Da Aristo, ignaro di tutto. Il bar doveva essere chiuso. La piazza era vuota. Nulla lasciava presagire ciò che stava per accadere.
Poi si sono accese le luci e, mentre la porta si apriva, l’inconfondibile suono della musica ha riempito l’aria: gli Aristodemos hanno iniziato a suonare. La sorpresa ha lasciato spazio alle risate, le risate agli abbracci e, in un attimo, è nata una festa.
La serata ha celebrato il settantesimo compleanno di Keane — anche se “celebrato” sembra una parola troppo piccola. È stato un vero assalto d’affetto, organizzato con calore e discrezione da sua figlia Melanie, insieme a un gruppo di amici e allo staff sempre accogliente di Da Aristo — un luogo profondamente intrecciato nel tessuto sociale di Barga Vecchia, che ancora una volta ha dimostrato cosa rappresentino davvero spazi come questo. Non solo un bar, ma un punto d’incontro, un rifugio, un palcoscenico, un salotto per la città.
Keane, che per decenni ha raccontato Barga attraverso parole, fotografie e dipinti, si è trovato — per un momento breve e bellissimo — dall’altra parte dell’obiettivo.
