The installation on the new modular exhibition space in Palazzo Pancrazi in Barga Vecchia was only finished late last night or early this morning but already it is showing what a great improvement the new free standing movable structures actually are.
What would’ve been a visually overpowering exhibition of photographs using the old exhibition space has now been transformed into an open area, visually exciting and a totally inviting space.
The new exhibition by Stefano Lupi has opened the first of the seasons series of exhibitions in Palazzi Pancrazi and this one that is not to be missed.
His photographic project focuses on women whose creativity, professionalism and talent shape the cultural life of Tuscany, portraying them within their own workplaces and creative environments. Growing out of the earlier project Wo-Men at Work – Artists and Artisans of Tuscany, the portraits form a visual record of a region and its people, celebrating the skills, traditions and human stories that continue to define Tuscany today.
Skills and Creativity in Tuscany
In recent years the human figure has become the central focus of my photographic work. More recently my attention has turned in particular to the female figure — rich in nuance, strength and light, yet today also marked by shadow.
For someone who uses photography as a way of exploring the human spirit, portraiture offers a powerful language. A portrait can reveal both the individuality of a person and serve as a small historical document of the time in which we live — a time that is constantly changing.
This project grows out of an earlier work, Wo-Men at Work – Artists and Artisans of Tuscany, shifting the focus towards the many women whose creativity and professionalism contribute to the cultural and social life of the region.
As the President of the Region of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, noted in the catalogue of Wo-Men at Work:
“Stefano Lupi’s work recognises the importance of female talent, in harmony with the project La Toscana delle Donne. This exhibition is a rare and valuable tribute to qualities that make us proud to be Tuscan.”
A Visual Narrative
Through these portraits, each woman is photographed within her own environment — a workplace, studio or creative space. Together they form a visual narrative that highlights the many skills, passions and talents present across Tuscany.
The images become not only individual portraits but a broader document of a territory, revealing the creativity, intelligence and determination that help define the excellence of a region and its people.
After its first exhibitions organised in collaboration with MIDA – the International Handicraft Exhibition and the Florence Chamber of Commerce, the project began travelling across Tuscany, stopping in several municipalities before reaching the Presidency of the Region of Tuscany.
WO-MEN AT WORK – Artists and Artisans of Tuscany
The earlier project Wo-Men at Work was conceived as a tribute to the artisans and artists whose work embodies the traditions and creativity of Tuscany.
In workshops and studios across the region, generations of knowledge continue to be passed down through tools, techniques and skills. Some of these crafts are disappearing, others are emerging, but all tell stories about the identity of the land and the people who live and work within it.
Through their faces and their work, these artisans and artists share stories that deserve to be known, remembered and preserved.
Stefano Lupi
Stefano Lupi is a professional in audiovisual communication and has worked for many years with his own production company, creating projects that combine photography, video and multimedia.
His work focuses on telling stories — of people, communities, companies and institutions. Photography has always been a central element of his work.
Over the years he has also collaborated with public and private organisations working in crisis areas across Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, documenting diverse social and healthcare realities while always keeping the human person at the centre of his work.

L’allestimento nel nuovo spazio espositivo modulare di Palazzo Pancrazi, a Barga Vecchia, è stato completato soltanto ieri sera tardi — o forse nelle prime ore di questa mattina — ma già dimostra quanto siano efficaci queste nuove strutture mobili autoportanti.
Quella che nel vecchio spazio espositivo avrebbe potuto rischiare di diventare una mostra fotografica visivamente opprimente si è invece trasformata in un ambiente aperto, dinamico e coinvolgente, che invita il visitatore a muoversi liberamente tra le opere.
La nuova mostra di Stefano Lupi inaugura la stagione espositiva di Palazzo Pancrazi ed è certamente un appuntamento da non perdere.
Il progetto fotografico di Lupi si concentra sulle donne la cui creatività, professionalità e talento contribuiscono alla vita culturale della Toscana, ritratte nei loro luoghi di lavoro e nei loro spazi creativi. Nato come evoluzione del precedente progetto Wo-Men at Work – Artisti e Artigiani di Toscana, questi ritratti diventano un documento visivo di un territorio e della sua gente, celebrando le competenze, le tradizioni e le storie umane che continuano ancora oggi a definire la Toscana.
Competenze e Creatività in Terra di Toscana
Negli ultimi anni la figura umana è diventata il fulcro del mio lavoro fotografico. Più recentemente la mia attenzione si è concentrata in particolare sulla figura femminile — ricca di sfumature, forza e luce, ma purtroppo oggi anche segnata da ombre.
Per chi, come me, utilizza la fotografia come strumento per indagare l’animo umano, il ritratto rappresenta un linguaggio potente. Un ritratto può rivelare l’individualità di una persona e allo stesso tempo diventare un piccolo documento storico del tempo in cui viviamo — un tempo in continuo cambiamento.
Questo progetto nasce come naturale evoluzione di un lavoro precedente, Wo-Men at Work – Artisti e Artigiani di Toscana, spostando lo sguardo sulle numerose realtà femminili che contribuiscono alla vita culturale e sociale della nostra regione.
Come sottolineava il Presidente della Regione Toscana, Eugenio Giani, nel catalogo di Wo-Men at Work:
“L’opera di Stefano Lupi attribuisce la giusta importanza anche al talento femminile, in piena sintonia con il progetto La Toscana delle Donne. Questa mostra è un omaggio raro e prezioso a qualità che ci rendono orgogliosi di essere toscani.”
Una Narrazione per Immagini
Attraverso questi ritratti, ogni donna viene fotografata nel proprio ambiente — il luogo di lavoro, lo studio, lo spazio creativo. Insieme, queste immagini costruiscono una narrazione visiva che mette in luce le molte competenze, passioni e talenti presenti in tutta la Toscana.
I ritratti diventano così non solo profili individuali, ma anche un documento più ampio di un territorio, raccontando la creatività, l’intelligenza e la determinazione che contribuiscono all’eccellenza di una regione e della sua gente.
Dopo le prime esposizioni realizzate in collaborazione con la direzione del MIDA – Mostra Internazionale dell’Artigianato e con la Camera di Commercio di Firenze, il progetto ha iniziato un percorso itinerante attraverso diversi comuni toscani, fino ad approdare alla Presidenza della Regione Toscana.
WO-MEN AT WORK – Artisti e Artigiani di Toscana
Il progetto precedente Wo-Men at Work nasce come un omaggio agli artigiani e agli artisti che incarnano le tradizioni e la creatività della Toscana.
Nelle botteghe e negli atelier della regione continuano a vivere conoscenze tramandate di generazione in generazione attraverso strumenti, tecniche e saperi. Alcuni di questi mestieri stanno scomparendo, altri stanno nascendo, ma tutti raccontano qualcosa dell’identità di questa terra e delle persone che vi lavorano.
Attraverso i loro volti e il loro lavoro, questi artisti e artigiani raccontano storie che meritano di essere conosciute, ricordate e preservate.

Stefano Lupi è un professionista nel campo della comunicazione audiovisiva e da molti anni opera con una propria casa di produzione, realizzando progetti che uniscono fotografia, video e multimedialità.
Il suo lavoro si concentra sul racconto di storie — storie di persone, comunità, aziende e istituzioni. La fotografia ha sempre rappresentato un elemento centrale della sua attività.
Nel corso degli anni ha inoltre collaborato con organizzazioni pubbliche e private impegnate in aree di crisi in Africa, Medio Oriente e nei Balcani, documentando diverse realtà sociali e sanitarie, mantenendo sempre al centro del suo lavoro la persona umana.
