Chewing Gum deposits on the streets of Barga Vecchia
Our Objective is to Eliminate
‘Gumbugging’
(Definitions:

disposal of used chewing gum in our towns and cities,
blobs of which can be found on pavements, roads, pedestrian
precincts, parks, public buildings, schools, etc.. ‘Gumbug’

Chewing Gum deposits on the streets of
Barga Vecchia
It is estimated that there are more than 19 million
gum chewers in the Italy chewing their way through more
than 980 million packs of gum per year. World-wide Local
Authorities, Property Management Companies, etc., with areas
contaminated with this unsightly problem are now actively
looking for a successful method of attacking and resolved
this major problem.
The centuries old paved streets of Barga
now look like this;
The problem of chewing gum on the streets of Barga Vecchia
is becoming more acute as each year passes. With the now
huge increase in visitors coming to Barga the problem can
no longer be ignored. Lets look at the facts:
1.Piazza Angelio
2.Porta Reale
3.Piazza Comune
4. Duomo
5.Fornacetta
6. Via di Mezzo
It is a matter of changing attitudes by education;
not prevention by legislation. In our free and democratic
society we do not want to take draconian measures similar
to those in Singapore, where one can be imprisoned for importing chewing gum! Chewing it in
public is punishable up to a fine of $1,000 (£660) The
result, in that ultra-clean city, is a total absence of ‘gumbugging’,
but at the expense of freedom for the individual to exercise
personal responsibility.
The winning design for the chewing
gum collector was announced
today by the Barga City Council
A
weekly collection and recycling service for used
chewing gum was launched today in Barga Vecchia.
The aim of the project is to collect the used chewing
gum at special collection boxes situated
at strategic places around
Barga Vecchia. Once collected the chewing gum is
then sent to a recycling plant specially built at
Gallicano. It is estimated that the L350,000 monthly
cleaning bill of chewing gum from the streets of
Barga will be reduced by at least 20% (a
saving of L 70.000, which will more than pay for
the 15 specially constructed collection boxes in
under a year)
