The works of the composer Michael Stimpson have been performed, commissioned, and recorded by some of the UK’s most distinguished artists including the English Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Allegri and Maggini String Quartets, Bristol Bach Choir, Roderick Williams, Paul Agnew, David Campbell, Philippe Graffin, and Sioned Williams.
A number of the UK’s finest venues have featured performances of his work including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, and Cadogan Hall, as well as a variety of UK festivals. International recognition has prompted performances in Australia, Europe, Iran and the USA.
Michael was a resident of Barga for many years composing music which was influenced by his love of local culture – including music based on the poems of Giovanni Pascoli.
New work inspired by various elements of the area around Barga and Lucca – Suite Gromignana, a four movement work for brass quintet, recorded in London by Onyx Brass in January 2025 was released today.

First movement: Inspired by the spectacular landscapes and views of the region.
Second movement: Reflects the lively atmosphere and bustling piazzas of Lucca.
Third movement: Shifts to Sommocolonia, the hilltop village marked by its World War II history. – The third movement carries a more reflective tone, tied to the memory of a historic battle.
Final movement: Evokes the rivers flowing through the region, suggesting movement and continuity in the landscape.
Overall, the suite is deeply rooted in place, drawing musical inspiration from the geography, history, and daily life of the Barga–Lucca area.
