As the ground has been opened up for the ongoing redevelopment of the square, a line of stone has gradually come into view — not a fragment or isolated find, but a clearly defined wall, running across the site with a solidity that speaks of a once-functional structure. The presence of machinery alongside careful hand work reflects the dual nature of the operation: construction moving forward, but with pauses for observation and recording.
Initial assessments suggest that the wall does not belong to the distant past often imagined when something emerges from the ground in Barga. Instead, it appears to be part of a relatively recent layer of the city’s history — likely the remains of a building dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Its alignment and construction point strongly towards it having formed part of a domestic boundary, perhaps the edge of a house that once occupied this space before the square took its current form.
