Barga to Provide the Setting for New Feature Film This Autumn
Barga is set to become a film location once again this autumn as American filmmaker James Christian Mackenzie prepares to bring his new feature film A Love Triangle Has Two Sides to the city.
The project was officially launched this week through a crowdfunding campaign, with Mackenzie describing the film as a romantic story set in Italy that explores themes of love, identity, longing and the search for belonging.
For residents of Barga, Mackenzie’s name will already be familiar.
Over the past three summers he has led groups of students from the University of North Georgia’s School of Communication, Film and Theatre to Barga as part of an intensive filmmaking programme based at Casa Cordati. The programme has allowed young filmmakers to learn their craft while working within the unique setting of Barga Vecchia and the surrounding area.
Last year the students produced a documentary about Bruno Cordati (article here) , which premiered at the Fondazione Ricci before being submitted to international film festivals. The film provided a fresh perspective on Cordati’s life and artistic legacy while demonstrating the growing relationship between the university and the city.
That connection now appears to be entering a new chapter.
In a promotional video released to coincide with the launch of the crowdfunding campaign, Mackenzie reflects on the creative journey that has brought him to this latest project. As the video concludes, viewers are presented with a familiar sight: the Duomo of San Cristoforo rising above the rooftops of Barga Vecchia.
The image is more than simply a visual reference.
According to Mackenzie, filming for A Love Triangle Has Two Sides is scheduled to take place in Barga this autumn, bringing a feature film production to the city and further strengthening the ties that have developed through the University of North Georgia’s annual summer programme.
The University’s School of Communication, Film and Theatre focuses on storytelling in all its forms, preparing students for careers in filmmaking, journalism, digital media production, public relations and theatre. Through its continued presence in Barga, the programme has introduced many young American filmmakers to the city’s architecture, culture and community.
Now, with a feature-length romantic drama preparing to begin production, Barga itself will move from being an educational backdrop to becoming part of the story on screen.
For a city that has inspired artists, writers, musicians and photographers for generations, it seems only fitting that its streets, piazzas and skyline will soon provide the setting for a new cinematic love story.

Barga si prepara a diventare ancora una volta un set cinematografico questo autunno, mentre il regista americano James Christian Mackenzie si appresta a portare in città il suo nuovo lungometraggio A Love Triangle Has Two Sides.
Il progetto è stato lanciato ufficialmente questa settimana attraverso una campagna di crowdfunding. Mackenzie descrive il film come una storia romantica ambientata in Italia che esplora temi quali l’amore, l’identità, il desiderio e la ricerca del proprio posto nel mondo.
Per molti residenti di Barga, il nome di Mackenzie sarà già familiare.
Negli ultimi tre anni ha guidato gruppi di studenti della School of Communication, Film and Theatre dell’Università della North Georgia a Barga, nell’ambito di un intenso programma di formazione cinematografica con sede a Casa Cordati. Il progetto ha permesso a giovani registi di apprendere il proprio mestiere lavorando nello scenario unico di Barga Vecchia e del territorio circostante.
