End of an Era as Enzo Simonini Retired from Barga Pharmacy
After more than four decades behind the counter and as part of a family tradition that spanned 156 years, Dr Enzo Simonini retired this week, bringing to a close one of Barga’s longest-running family businesses.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Simonini thanked his colleagues, customers and friends for their support throughout his 42-year career. He reflected on the generations of pharmacists who came before him, from his great-grandfather Vincenzo Castelli to his uncle Vincenzo Simonini, and said it had been an honour to serve the people of Barga.
The pharmacy has now passed into the hands of Dr Viola Turri, herself a native of Barga and well known for her professional experience and strong connection to the community. The business will continue under the name Farmacia San Cristofano, reviving the historic name used by the pharmacy during the 1920s and recalling Barga’s patron saint, San Cristoforo.
While stepping away from daily work, Simonini assured the community that he would remain available whenever there was a need to help. His retirement marks the end of an important chapter in Barga’s history, but the future of the pharmacy appears to be in capable hands as a new generation takes over.

Dopo oltre quattro decenni dietro il banco e una tradizione familiare che si è protratta per 156 anni, il dottor Enzo Simonini ha concluso questa settimana la sua attività professionale, chiudendo un capitolo importante nella storia di una delle attività più longeve della città di Barga.
In un sentito messaggio pubblicato sui social media, Simonini ha ringraziato colleghi, collaboratori, clienti e amici per il sostegno ricevuto nel corso dei suoi 42 anni di carriera. Ha ricordato le generazioni di farmacisti che lo hanno preceduto, dal bisnonno Vincenzo Castelli allo zio Vincenzo Simonini, sottolineando come sia stato per lui un onore servire la comunità barghigiana.
La farmacia è ora passata nelle mani della dottoressa Viola Turri, anch’essa barghigiana e conosciuta per la sua professionalità e il forte legame con il territorio. L’attività proseguirà con il nome di Farmacia San Cristofano, recuperando così la storica denominazione utilizzata negli anni Venti e richiamando il nome del patrono di Barga, San Cristoforo, detto appunto alla barghigiana “San Cristofano”.
Pur lasciando il lavoro quotidiano dietro il banco, Simonini ha assicurato che continuerà ad essere presente ogni volta che ci sarà bisogno di dare una mano. Il suo pensionamento segna la conclusione di un importante capitolo della storia di Barga, ma il futuro della farmacia sembra essere in ottime mani grazie all’inizio di una nuova generazione.
