There are still corners of Barga that can surprise even those who have spent a lifetime walking its streets.
Hidden away in a quiet part of the city, far from the usual routes taken by visitors and even many residents, a small face has recently attracted attention. Set into an old stone wall at about eye level, the clay head appears to depict a sleeping woman. Over the past few days it has already acquired a name: “The Sleeping Madonna”
The little face is easy to miss. Its eyes are closed, its expression peaceful, and the weathered appearance of both the clay and the surrounding stonework makes it seem as though it may have been there for much longer than anyone realised.
Yet ask around and nobody appears to know much about it.
Was it always there? Has it simply gone unnoticed? Does it have a story attached to it? At the moment there are more questions than answers.
Rather than revealing its location, we thought it might be more interesting to allow readers to discover it for themselves.
So here is the challenge.

Ci sono ancora angoli di Barga capaci di sorprendere anche chi ha trascorso una vita intera a percorrerne le strade.
Nascosto in una zona tranquilla della città, lontano dai percorsi abituali dei visitatori e persino di molti residenti, un piccolo volto ha recentemente attirato l’attenzione. Inserita in un antico muro di pietra, all’incirca all’altezza degli occhi, una testa in argilla sembra raffigurare una donna addormentata. Negli ultimi giorni ha già ricevuto un nome: “La Madonna Dormiente”
Il piccolo volto è facile da non notare. Gli occhi sono chiusi, l’espressione è serena e l’aspetto consumato sia dell’argilla che della muratura circostante fa pensare che possa trovarsi lì da molto più tempo di quanto chiunque abbia immaginato.
Eppure, chiedendo in giro, sembra che nessuno sappia molto di lei.
È sempre stata lì? È semplicemente passata inosservata? Ha una storia da raccontare? Per il momento le domande sono più delle risposte.
Piuttosto che rivelarne la posizione, abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato più interessante permettere ai lettori di scoprirla da soli.
Ecco quindi la sfida.
