BargaJazz 2026 Opens Beneath the Apuan Alps
The 2026 BargaJazz Festival began on Sunday evening in Calomini, in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli, with an open-air concert by the Fat Fingers Sax Quartet.
The musicians performed outside the church, where the audience gathered beneath the trees with the Apuan Alps rising behind them. As the sun gradually disappeared beyond the Pania, the changing evening light became part of the setting for the first concert in this year’s month-long programme.
FAT FINGERS SAX QUARTET
The quartet brought together the four principal voices of the saxophone family:
Renzo Cristiano Telloli – alto saxophone
Moraldo Marcheschi – soprano saxophone
Alessandro Rizzardi – tenor saxophone
Rossano Emili – baritone saxophone
With no rhythm section or other instruments, the music depended entirely on the relationship between the four saxophones. The soprano and alto carried the higher lines, while the tenor and baritone added warmth, depth and weight to the arrangements.
Together, the instruments covered a range of around five octaves, allowing the quartet to move between delicate passages and the much fuller sound of all four musicians playing as a single ensemble.
The unusual location added another dimension to the performance. Against the stone wall of the church and the wide mountain landscape beyond, the sound of the saxophones marked the beginning of a festival that will continue through Barga and a number of neighbouring communities until the end of August.
It was a simple but memorable opening: four musicians, four saxophones and an audience listening as daylight slowly faded across the mountains.

Il BargaJazz Festival 2026 ha preso il via domenica sera a Calomini, nel comune di Fabbriche di Vergemoli, con un concerto all’aperto del Fat Fingers Sax Quartet.
I musicisti si sono esibiti sul sagrato della chiesa, dove il pubblico si è riunito all’ombra degli alberi, con le Alpi Apuane sullo sfondo. Mentre il sole scendeva lentamente dietro la Pania, la luce della sera è diventata parte della scenografia naturale del primo concerto del programma di quest’anno.

Il quartetto ha riunito le quattro voci principali della famiglia dei sassofoni:

Senza sezione ritmica o altri strumenti, la musica si è costruita interamente sul dialogo fra i quattro sassofoni. Il soprano e l’alto hanno guidato le linee più acute, mentre il tenore e il baritono hanno dato calore, profondità e corpo agli arrangiamenti.
Nel loro insieme, gli strumenti hanno coperto un’estensione di circa cinque ottave, permettendo al quartetto di passare da momenti più delicati alla sonorità piena dei quattro musicisti riuniti in un’unica voce.
Anche il luogo ha dato una dimensione particolare alla musica. Tra il muro in pietra della chiesa e l’ampio paesaggio montano, il suono dei sassofoni ha segnato l’inizio di un festival che proseguirà tra Barga e diverse comunità vicine fino alla fine di agosto.
È stata un’apertura semplice ma memorabile: quattro musicisti, quattro sassofoni e un pubblico in ascolto mentre la luce del giorno scompariva lentamente dietro le montagne.
