The BargaJazz Festival turned its attention to a new generation of jazz musicians on 19 August with the BargaJazz Contest 2026, the annual competition dedicated to emerging groups whose members are under the age of 35.
Two groups had reached the final, bringing together young musicians from Italy and Germany and two very different musical projects.
The winners of the BargaJazz Contest 2026 were the musicians from Berlin – Bulez Trio, with Daniel Shachar on guitar, Yonatan Harari on bass and Gili Kovesh on drums.
Runners up were The Francesco Zanotti Quartet from Roma – Francesco Zanotti on guitar, Andrea Cardone on saxophone, Andrea Pochesce on double bass and Joshua Frau on drums.
Andrea Cardone on saxophone was also awarded the Luca Flores Prize, presented to the best soloist.
The prize remembers pianist Luca Flores, an exceptional figure in Italian jazz who died prematurely in 1995. Flores had been closely connected with the early years of BargaJazz, taking part in some of the first editions of the festival.
Nearly four decades later, his name remained attached to a prize intended to recognise exactly what BargaJazz had encouraged from its beginnings: young musicians developing their own voices and being given a stage on which those voices could be heard.
The BargaJazz Contest has long been an important part of the festival’s commitment to younger musicians, offering emerging jazz groups an opportunity to perform, present their work to a wider audience and make new connections within the jazz world.
Rather than concentrating simply on technical ability, particular attention has traditionally been given to the originality and identity of the projects presented — encouraging musicians to arrive in Barga with their own musical ideas and their own approach to contemporary jazz.
Il BargaJazz Festival ha rivolto la sua attenzione a una nuova generazione di musicisti jazz il 19 agosto con il BargaJazz Contest 2026, il concorso annuale dedicato ai gruppi emergenti i cui componenti hanno meno di 35 anni.
Due gruppi erano arrivati in finale, riunendo giovani musicisti provenienti dall’Italia e dalla Germania e presentando due progetti musicali molto diversi tra loro.
I vincitori del BargaJazz Contest 2026 sono stati i musicisti berlinesi del Bulez Trio, con Daniel Shachar alla chitarra, Yonatan Harari al basso e Gili Kovesh alla batteria.
Al secondo posto si è classificato il Francesco Zanotti Quartet di Roma, con Francesco Zanotti alla chitarra, Andrea Cardone al sassofono, Andrea Pochesce al contrabbasso e Joshua Frau alla batteria.
Andrea Cardone al sassofono ha inoltre ricevuto il Premio Luca Flores, assegnato al miglior solista.
Il premio ricorda il pianista Luca Flores, figura straordinaria del jazz italiano, prematuramente scomparso nel 1995. Flores era stato strettamente legato ai primi anni di BargaJazz, partecipando ad alcune delle prime edizioni del festival.
Quasi quattro decenni dopo, il suo nome continua ad essere legato a un premio pensato per riconoscere proprio ciò che BargaJazz ha incoraggiato fin dalle sue origini: giovani musicisti impegnati a sviluppare una propria voce e ai quali viene offerto un palcoscenico sul quale quella voce possa essere ascoltata.
Il BargaJazz Contest rappresenta da tempo una parte importante dell’impegno del festival nei confronti dei giovani musicisti, offrendo ai gruppi jazz emergenti l’opportunità di esibirsi, presentare il proprio lavoro a un pubblico più ampio e creare nuovi contatti all’interno del mondo del jazz.
Piuttosto che concentrarsi esclusivamente sulle capacità tecniche, tradizionalmente viene riservata particolare attenzione all’originalità e all’identità dei progetti presentati, incoraggiando i musicisti ad arrivare a Barga con le proprie idee musicali e con un approccio personale al jazz contemporaneo.
