Lebanese pianist Tarek Yamani brought a very different musical language to Barga on Tuesday 18 August, appearing with his Berlin-based trio as part of this year’s BargaJazz Festival.
Born and raised in Beirut, Yamani is a self-taught jazz pianist who now lives in Berlin after spending almost a decade in New York City. His music brings jazz together with rhythms and melodic traditions drawn from the Arabian Gulf and Arabic classical music, creating a sound that moves naturally between different musical cultures.
In Barga he was joined by Igor Spallati on double bass and Ugo Alunni on drums, the trio presenting music from Yamani’s latest album, Lisan Al Tarab: Jazz Conceptions in Classical Arabic.
The project explores what happens when Arabic classical music is placed within the language and structures of jazz. The resulting music has often been described as “Afro-Tarab”, bringing together Arabic melodic modes and traditional rhythms with jazz improvisation and the interaction of the piano trio.
The repertoire travelled across both geography and time, from the musical traditions of early 20th-century Egypt to the contemporary jazz world of New York. Classical Arabic muwashahat appeared alongside jazz standards and Yamani’s own compositions, built around traditional Arabic rhythms and melodic modes.
For BargaJazz, a festival which has always placed improvisation at the centre of its musical identity, Yamani’s trio offered another way of looking at where jazz can travel when it encounters a different musical tradition — not simply combining two styles, but allowing each to reshape the other.

Nato e cresciuto a Beirut, Yamani è un pianista jazz autodidatta che oggi vive a Berlino, dopo aver trascorso quasi un decennio a New York. La sua musica unisce il jazz ai ritmi e alle tradizioni melodiche del Golfo Arabico e della musica classica araba, creando un suono che si muove naturalmente tra culture musicali diverse.
A Barga è stato affiancato da Igor Spallati al contrabbasso e Ugo Alunni alla batteria, presentando con il trio musiche tratte dal suo ultimo album, Lisan Al Tarab: Jazz Conceptions in Classical Arabic.
Il progetto esplora ciò che accade quando la musica classica araba entra nel linguaggio e nelle strutture del jazz. Il risultato è una musica spesso definita “Afro-Tarab”, nella quale modi melodici e ritmi tradizionali arabi si incontrano con l’improvvisazione jazz e l’interazione tipica del trio con pianoforte.
Il repertorio ha attraversato geografie ed epoche diverse, dalle tradizioni musicali dell’Egitto dei primi del Novecento fino al mondo del jazz contemporaneo di New York. Le muwashahat della tradizione classica araba si sono affiancate agli standard jazz e alle composizioni originali di Yamani, costruite intorno a ritmi tradizionali arabi e modi melodici.
Per BargaJazz, festival che ha sempre posto l’improvvisazione al centro della propria identità musicale, il trio di Yamani ha offerto un altro modo di osservare fin dove possa spingersi il jazz quando incontra una tradizione musicale diversa — non semplicemente unendo due stili, ma lasciando che ciascuno trasformi l’altro.
