The strong artistic connection between Barga and Scotland was celebrated on 3 September with the presentation of a new bust of Scottish painter John Bellany.
The sculpture was unveiled in Piazza Angelio, outside the John Bellany Gallery, home of the BargaScot cultural association and the permanent exhibition dedicated to the artist.
Donated to the Comune di Barga by the Lions Club Garfagnana, the bust offered a lasting tribute to one of Scotland’s most important post-war painters and to an artist who developed a particularly close relationship with Barga.
Born in Port Seton in 1942, Bellany became known for powerful figurative paintings strongly influenced by Scotland’s fishing communities, the sea, religion and the human condition. His work entered major international collections, including Tate, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Bellany died in 2013, but his connection with Barga continued through the gallery and permanent collection in Piazza Angelio.
The presentation, held as part of the Barga Scottish Festival, added another permanent reminder of the cultural ties between Barga and Scotland, with Bellany’s image now taking its place in the heart of Barga Vecchia.

Il forte legame artistico tra Barga e la Scozia è stato celebrato il 3 settembre con la presentazione di un nuovo busto dedicato al pittore scozzese John Bellany.
La scultura è stata inaugurata in Piazza Angelio, davanti alla Galleria John Bellany, sede dell’Associazione Culturale BargaScot e dell’esposizione permanente dedicata all’artista.
Donato al Comune di Barga dal Lions Club Garfagnana, il busto ha rappresentato un omaggio permanente a uno dei più importanti pittori scozzesi del dopoguerra e a un artista che aveva sviluppato un rapporto particolarmente stretto con Barga.
Nato a Port Seton nel 1942, Bellany divenne celebre per la sua potente pittura figurativa, profondamente influenzata dalle comunità di pescatori scozzesi, dal mare, dalla religione e dalla condizione umana. Le sue opere entrarono nelle collezioni di importanti istituzioni internazionali, tra cui la Tate, le National Galleries of Scotland e il Museum of Modern Art di New York.
Bellany morì nel 2013, ma il suo legame con Barga è continuato attraverso la galleria e la collezione permanente di Piazza Angelio.
La presentazione, inserita nel programma del Barga Scottish Festival, ha aggiunto così un altro segno permanente dei legami culturali tra Barga e la Scozia, con l’immagine di John Bellany che ha trovato ora il suo posto nel cuore di Barga Vecchia.
