There was some excitement outside Da Aristo in Barga Vecchia this week, but it wasn’t a delivery of wine or beer that was attracting attention.
Instead, several large cardboard boxes arrived containing three brand-new musical instruments: a cajón, an acoustic bass guitar and a ukulele.
Unpacking them quickly became something of a communal event, with the boxes opened on the tables outside the bar and the instruments passed around for inspection.
First out was the ukulele, a small four-stringed instrument that immediately attracted attention and was soon being tried out at one of the tables.
Next came the acoustic bass guitar, considerably larger and offering a new addition to the collection of instruments available for the musical evenings at Da Aristo.
Finally, there was the cajón, the wooden percussion box originally from Peru, played by sitting on it and striking its front surface with the hands. A deceptively simple instrument capable of producing both deep bass notes and sharp, snare-like sounds.
Music has always been an important part of life at Da Aristo, particularly through the regular appearances of The Aristodemos, whose performances have become a familiar feature of evenings in the piazza.
The arrival of three new instruments suggests that this musical tradition is in no danger of slowing down.
And judging by the enthusiasm with which the boxes were opened, it seems unlikely that the new arrivals will remain silent for very long.
At Da Aristo, even unpacking a delivery can turn into a musical occasion.
