There are signs of autumn that happen at ground level — cooler evenings, shorter days, the first leaves beginning to turn. But sometimes it is worth looking up.
Over the last few days, swallows have been appearing in the skies above Barga, sweeping across the clouds and gathering before continuing south.
These are not necessarily the birds that spent the summer here. Barga lies along the route of swallows moving down through Europe, and at this time of year new groups arrive from further north, stopping briefly to feed and rest before moving on.
For a short period the city becomes part of a much larger journey.
They hunt continuously while they are here, catching insects in flight and building up the energy needed for the next stage. One moment the sky can appear empty; the next, birds are cutting across it at extraordinary speed, sometimes little more than black silhouettes against the autumn clouds.
Their destination lies far beyond Barga. The migration will eventually take them across the Mediterranean and onwards into Africa, where European swallows spend the winter before making the same remarkable journey north again in spring.
There is no ceremony to their departure. Gradually there are simply fewer of them.
Then one day you look up and realise they have gone.
For now, though, they are still passing overhead — small, fast-moving shapes against an increasingly autumnal Barga sky.

Rondini in viaggio
